Hyper Puppy

I just got a Sheltie puppy.. But she is always so hyper! She is a always playing with Tarra, but I want her to
Just calm down and cuddle. She is so hyper, it's almost impossible. Will she grow out of it? What can I do about it?
 
Puppies need to play to develop. Sheltie puppies need to play a LOT. At that age, they have two speeds ... on and off. If you let a Sheltie try and find things to do to be busy, it will get into trouble, so you have to take the initiative when they need to burn off that energy. The rewards will be worth it in the long run. :smile2:
 
Dogs have all different levels of energy. As they age, it usually goes down. I've had Ruutu since 8 weeks and he's now almost 13 months old. He's still as hyper as he was when we brought them home. What I learned that helps is to get involved in classes when shots are all done. When we had classes to go to he'd come home exhausted and even a little the next day. At her age, all she wants to do is play, so enjoy it and play :yes:. I miss the days Honey used to have tons of energy, now it seems like all she does is sleep and chase after Ruutu when he's playing.
 
Your puppy sounds a lot like my dog when she was a puppy. Constantly in motion! I swear she never slept... unless she was in her crate. It just seemed like she didn't know how to turn herself "off" unless you forced her to go in her crate, then she would lay down and take a nap. She is still like this outside of our house. She just can't relax.. not sure if it's anxiety or what.

My suggestion to you is this- give her forced naps. It's not meant to be a punishment, but she needs to take a break. For every couple hours she's running around with Tarra, give her a couple hours in the crate for a nap. I'm not sure if you're crate training, but it's the same idea because while she's in her crate, you don't have to actively watch her.

With Missy, if you let her play too long, she started acting like an over-tired toddler and was just ridiculous. I do not miss those days...
 
We followed The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. Their methods provide the perfect balance of play, nutrition and rest, combined with scheduled potty times. I had no idea of the best way to raise a puppy, but the Monks made it clear.

By the way, calm down and cuddle usually takes a while!! Layla would only cuddle if she was whomped, but as an adult, she's quite the snuggler, as are all our Shelties. And Huckleberry lives to cuddle!

Right now, Layla is on the pillow, while a snow-covered Colonel Underpants is curled up beside her. Ah, wet dog in the bed!

This. Lexi was exactly the same. She was not a cuddly puppy.

Now, she's 4, and she's SUPER affectionate.
