I can't get ear tape to STICK!

I noticed that with my dogs, too. Within 45 mins of taking the ears down, up they went. Especially because the rolled part of the tape tends to roll upwards so the ear isn't bent halfway down like it's supposed to. So, I went back to gluing and Claussen's (9months) cartilage has finally started to harden and he doesn't have perfect tips but there's a tip...better than the extremely large bat ears I started with. The breeder I got him from is a gluer. He lost ALLLLL his hair on and around his ears from using Goo-Gone to remove the glue (yeah...last time I go off a recommendation without looking into it). So I had to use the tape for a couple months. Now I'm back to glue. Have you ever considered glue? Mine has been maintenance free for 2.5 months now!

Sounds good, but I have to take them out for trials. AKC doesn't allow glue, tape etc. Good to know all is not lost if I keep after these ears. She sure does have big ears and untipped....not very good. Thanks for your help.

How often are your trials? The glue takes a little longer to take out than tape, but it it keeps the ears put for as long as you leave them. You said you aren't doing a brace, which is the worst part if you're gluing...it's so hard to take the glue brace out without taking hair out too, but since you aren't doing the bracing, I would try glue. Removing glue from just the tips would be super easy! I use unisolve and it works beautifully. Have you ever thought about trying glue?

I've been using mole skin and am pretty comfortable with the process. Her ears were glued when I got her from the breeder and it was such a mess to take out.

My daughter helped me get her ears set last night with mole skin....so I'll remove it Sat. evening and put them back up Sunday evening. Repeat for the next two week ends. The next two week ends won't be as bad, because she won't have to have her ears unset to go to the groomer. That was just for this week.

Thanks for all the help. I guess the ear tape just wasn't the solution I thought it would be...:(

glue does not work for taking in and out repeatedly in short time spans...after a few times you end up with fur loss and than you have nothing to use...and you end up with a bald spot...tape/moleskin is much better to work with for the dogs ears. As long as your comfortable with using the moleskin keep with it.

ps I got a dog from the same breeder and cursed him up and down when removing the glue from mine!!!!!!!

Agreed - if you are using glue, you can't take it in and out constantly. And when you do, you really need a good remover like Detachol.

If you are constrained when showing, then I think Japanese tape is the best solution. I think that will leave a residue behind as well, so again, I recommend Detachol to remove any glue reside.

It has no smell and it does not sting. It's used to remove adhesive bandages from humans, so is safe on dogs.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how often it would have to be taken out...if it's only once a month, then glue would be more okay. The Japanese tape method I could get the tape out, ears cleaned, and set back up in 10 minutes at one point. The only reason I stopped using it was because I couldn't get the rolled tape part to stay rolled down.

Perhaps Lightplum could give some advice on how to get that rolled part to stay put so that the ear stays bent halfway?? I was having to redo the ears every couple days because it would roll upwards from the dogs playing or scratching, or just roll up naturally because the ears are trying to stand up.

I've been using Detachol for removing the mole skin. I hate the smell! It makes me cough and sneeze for hours....wonder if there are different brands? Can't imagine how Pyper tolerates it. I use Zoeze to clean the ears, before I redo the mole skin. Pyper seems to dislike the smell of that a lot!

I sure hope after all this messing around, these ears eventually tip.

Yeah, Pyper was shipped to me and when we decided it was time to redo ears, the glue was a mess. I felt so sorry for her, she was such a baby yet. By the time we got to redoing her ears with mole skin, she was sound asleep.:sleepy:

Unisolve has worked better for me than detachol...It's still got alcohol in it, but it's a different smell. It does leave an oily residue so cleaning with dawn or zoeze afterwards would be a good idea.

I opened my bottle and gave it a whiff. I was wrong, there is a smell, but it is a sweet smell, not nasty. Are you allergic to perfume by chance? I expect that might be why you have a reaction to it. Perhaps there is a commong ingredient there.....
