I had to put down my first dog this christmas. Kidney failure. He wasn't even 5 yet.

I am so sorry for your loss.

As others have stated please don't abuse yourself over this. It is always easy to second guess and be "sure" you could have done better.

You provided love and care until the end. It is hard to accept we have limits in what we can do, but we all are limited. Have peace.

Devastating news. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I too would have done exactly all the things you did in the same situation. Your boy knew how much you loved him, and that you did your very best for him. My heart goes out to you.

Please do not be so hard on yourself and blame yourself that you did not do enough.

You did - you did everything you could, and a lot more you loved him and gave a lot of love in the five years that he was allowed to live. (His mom had probably the feeling of his health was not strong).

I can see in your posts that he had more health problems in his short life, and all that you helped him through.

Now the time has come where his organs could not more and you did it right, you saved him for so much pain.

I'm really sorry you have to go through this grief, I know how it hurts, and it will never go away completely, but he will always have a small space in your heart.

Veronika - Remember there is definitely a lovable little puppy waiting for your love out there. :hugs

There is not much more that I can say that everyone else has not said. Just know I am very sorry for your loss and that you will be in my thoughts a prayers.

My Bacca was 6 years old when I had to send him to the bridge. He had been on medscf I'm an early age for hypothyroid. Ok I could deal with that. But then his annual blood tests revealed liver issues. Long story, short, he went from healthy to very sick in less than 1 year or so. I had the option for liver shunt surgery. $6000 and no guarantee. Went to a new vet, and we attempted to treat with food changes and meds. Then I was on vacation in Dominican and got the call.....bacca had gone into seizures and not recovering. I sat on the beach in the lovely resort on my cell phone and told my vet to send him on. Hardest thing ever.

All to say, I know and understand your pain and losing them too young. Bacca was my forever dog. I've since brought home Callan and Aiden, but Bacca is still the one.

Thank you for all your kind words and wishes, all your posts helped put me a little more at ease about the situation. Knowing that others have gone through similiar hardships is strangely helpful in some way so I really appreciate everyone sharing their stories and support :hugs

Having Fletch constantly beside me for almost 5yrs, the empty spot now is definitely noticeable. I find myself constantly instinctively reaching out to him and being careful where I walk at night so I don't accidentally step on his tail. I'm pretty sure I'll be finding his fur all over my clothes and furniture for years to come. I know it gets easier with time, so I'm just trying to focus on the postive from here on out.

I buried him at our family cottage where he loved to run around. Come spring I'll plant lots of flowers above his resting place.

My heart breaks for you...so sorry that you are going through this. Please don't beat yourself up, but know that you gave him the best life that he could have. Cyber hugs

That sounds lovely:). I hope after some healing, you will welcome another Sheltie into your life. It doesn't replace Fletch(I love that name) at all. Life just isn't as good without a Sheltie imho.

I agree. I waited too long after loosing our last sheltie. 10 years to be exact. By that time I had become to guarded in falling in love with another for fear of the pain in losing it. It wasn't until my brother-in-law's uncle had a litter of pups that I was reminded of the joy I got from our last dog.

When my 2nd sheltie passed. I didn't think I could do it again. And yet I like having dogs in my life, I couldn't face my journey without them. I think that is the key. Nothing replaces the memories or the bond you have had with a pet. Each is special. Thinking a new pet is a replacement isn't quite fair. I think it strains, sours, and saddles the relationship from the start with unreal expectations. Loving anything is a risk, but for me, worth the risk. I don't want to miss out on those adventures. Shelties keep me young at heart, and teach me oodles. Kaleigh & Savannah are SO different from the previous girls, but right for my present circumstance.
