I lost my best friend Saturday...

I sat and read your post last night, with my Sheltie girl Callie on my lap, with tears streaming down my face. So sorry for your loss. Crash sounds like a wonderful dog and a great soul mate. My only words of consolation are that no matter how much it hurts, it's better than seeing him suffer for months in pain.

Crash will be waiting patiently for you at the Rainbow Bridge. In the meantime, remember the good times and hopefully your pain will start to ease as you do. Callie sends some extra licks your way, and I'm sending virtual hugs.

What a beautiful tribute to a special dog.
There is something to be said about blue dogs, they seem to have little sense of self preservation and crash into things, don't they? Your Crash was clearly well loved and aptly named.

As I read your post I was moved to tears by your pain and I am so sorry for how you must feel. My sensitive Toffee was beside himself trying to comfort me, but Spruce, the blue menace kinda just fell off the bed playing around :rolleyes2: because he's a tad oblivious like that...

I feel in my gut you did the right thing and gave him a gift we cannot give any human family member, to die with some comfort instead of waiting for Crash not being able to breathe. I don't believe there was anything else you could have done. That was very sad, but brave as well.

He is running free into things at the rainbow bridge, being greeted by many fur friends and having proper sheltie zoomies while he's waiting to be able to greet you in many many years.

You will never forget him, but it will get easier and you will be able to talk about him and think about him without tears after a while.

thank you everyone

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read and respond. It means a great deal.

Its been 8 days now without Crash. i cant say that it feels any better.

If it wasn't for my kids (6 and 2), i don't know where i would be. I'm still having my breakdowns as everywhere i look, i see him. Everything we do, he is supposed to be a part of. looking back through photos - its amazing how many times he was caught in the background or on the side (aka photobomb). For eleven years he has been there in every waking second. And now, he is gone.

There are some smiles here and there, but mostly tears. The hard parts are going out into the yard without him, seeing his crate (which i dont know when, if ever, i will be able to move - and the corner of the dining room where his dishes are.

The floors are filthy - never realized how many crumbs end up there without him around.

I keep finding myself holding and clenching his collar and tags - wishing this was all a dream and hoping to wake up.

I miss you Crash and love you so much...

Your post about Crash and your love and feelings right now was so eloquent and sent me straight back to Aug 29 2003 when our Skye's struggle with kidney disease came to an end with our help. Trust me, many of us know this exquisite pain you are feeling. I saw Skye every where in the house and yard, Yesterday was her birthday.

It will get gradually easier but give yourself permission to really feel your feelings, don't try to ignore or push them down. Everyone grieves at their own pace.

I hope in time you will consider adding a new Sheltie friend to honor Crash and carry on the Sheltie friend tradition in your life.

Wishing you peace. You so did the right thing.

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Tears are flowing for you. It is so hard. Hang on to those memories. When the time is right, please consider another Sheltie, not to replace Crash, but to honour the dog he was and is in your heart.

If It Should Be

So sorry for your loss. It's been 8 months since I lost my fur baby and I still cry like a baby when I think about him. Here's a poem I read that helped me a little with the decision of euthanasia. It never gets any easier.

If It Should Be

If it should be I grow frail and weak and pain prevents my peaceful sleep,
Then you must do what must be done when this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand. Don't let selfishness stay you hand.
But on this day, more than the rest, your love and friendship take the test.

We've had so many happy years that what's to come must hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer, so, when the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend only stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you too will see that it is a kindness you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved, from pain and suffering I have been saved.

Do not grieve it should be you who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years......Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Miss you, Crash.

17 days and it still feels like its only been hours.

I miss him so much. I finally had a dream last night that he was waiting for me when I came home. He ran to me. I was so happy to see him. I knelt down and hugged him so tight - it was so real. Then i woke up and immediately felt that empty pit in my stomach...

I miss you so much, Crash...

He IS waiting for you. You will see each other again when the time comes. Until then remember all the wonderful happy memories you have together. Maybe what you need is another friend to love you, to be there for you, to trust and be trusted. Never to replace your lost friend, but to honor him, and to help heal the scars left on your heart. I could never imagine my life without my dogs. I would be in as much pain as your in now. I know you loved Crash very much. He loved you too, do you think he would want the person that he loved so much to go through so much pain? He would want you to be happy agian. Stay strong for him, stay strong for yourself, and stay strong for your family. :hugs

Call me crazy, but I believe he visited you last night. My first Sheltie died 30 years ago...and to this day, once a year or so, I dream about him and the dream is so vivid and feels so real that I would swear he had been there. I think he probably is, in some form. Same with Crash. He's trying to tell you he will never be truly gone, and your bond will always exist.
