Hello everyone I am going to be getting a sheltie but I really want to know how big they get from the head to the feet
Maybe you guys could share some picks of yours compared to you? Thanks and also any advice on being left home alone and how they get on with other dogs, best toys, what collars etc
I will be sure to introduce my puppy when I get her
Thanks everyone !

There's a huge amount of variability when it comes to sheltie size. My Spirit Joy is a tiny little girl, standing 12 inches and weighing 12 pounds at two years of age.

Spirit loves pretty much everyone, including other dogs. Though she's not thrilled with children. I try not to leave her alone for extended periods of time if I can help it, but that's just a personal preference.

Can't wait to see pictures of the new pup!

Oh okay! It's just the thing is I would rather a smaller one, haha I think I'll pick the runt of the litter
But honestly I'd be happy with any size, I just love them so much !
I probably won't be getting my pup for another year though, or atleast until we move, my last dog, got out the gate and ran onto the highway, and we can all guess what happened next ...RIP Roxy:love::love::((:(( so I don't want to risk another one getting out, but I am so looking forward to getting one!! I've never owned a sheltie so any advice on them would be great thanks everyone!

Runts of the litter do not nec. stay small, they are just behind for one reason or the other. My pup's litter had large (17.5" -- 35 pounds) to two siblings who barely made 13". You want to look at the whole litter and see which are smaller but not nec. the runt.

Words of advice since you asked -- shelties can and do RUN. They will bolt and be gone. You will want to be even more diligent about the gate, keeping the dog on leash, watching around doors, etc. Other word of advice, either a Ruffwear Webmaster harness (it has 2 belly straps to help prevent slipping out) or a martingale collar for the leash. You cannot use a regular collar for walking purposes. Be sure to attend classes because it makes for a better dog. Chip and register the chip. Feed a lower fat diet.

I have a 20" 50 lb. sheltie. I'm good with that though, all his magnificence would not fit in a smaller body. Same with his nephew who is *only* 18" and 30 lbs. I think they packed twice the personality in that one. :)

Big or small, I like them all.

I have two Shelties from the same litter. On of them was the runt and it now a fairly large 37 lbs. 3-year-old. His brother is only slightly larger at 40 lbs.

My former two were the runts...both were 40 lbs. They caught up and grew big and strong. They lived longer than their siblings. Savannah was the biggest girl (3 girls, 3 boys in her litter) but she ended up being the smallest sibling. She is 15lbs-smaller than her parents. You just never really know what will happen. Kaleigh is bigger than her parents. She had a bigger brother but he didn't make it. Genes, gender, environment? it all factors in.

Another example of unpredictable sizes... my Keiran was the largest in his litter when he was born and ended up to the smaller size, 13.5" at his shoulder, and he wasn't even supposed to get that tall according to his growth chart. (Gotta love late growth spurts.)

If you go with a Sheltie, go with one that fits your lifestyle, don't worry to much about size.
