Karen - Many dogs hate "down-stay" because it becomes a "forced" exercise and unnatural position when the owner leaves it.
When I saw this and my first GSD hated it so much too - I decided that for my next dogs I would make a play.
It looks so funny when a little puppy almost jumps into the air to land on the ground with all four legs at once to get a treat
During learning I always throw a treat in the grass between the front paws, go a little bit away throwing a treat again and so on - when the dog is stable I will first throw a treat when I come back, but it requires patience because it takes time to get a safe "Down-stay" especially for a breed that is very related to its owner.
