I think he does not like me...

Everett has to be really really really excited to give a kiss. a few occasions i'v gotten 5! mostly its just one, and its very small and quick; and rare...

Maverick and Ryder are the same. Maverick fell in love with me the moment he saw me. He is my soul mate and is the most affectionate!!! dog. He loves to cuddle, wraps his paws around you and hugs back. He wiggles and worms around me. His whole bumb shakes when he sees me. He follows me every where. He sleeps in my lap like a baby. When he was a puppy he would sleep in my arms when I walked around the house.
Ryder, now a year, was a very unaffectionate puppy. Hated to be held, never came to me to be petted. Never jumped on my lap.Ran away from me when i tried to pet him. Ryder is still no Maverick, but at a year he is much more affectionate. He is just acting like an idiot in other ways.

Don't worry Eleore - the love and affection for you will come. I am not an expert like others on the Forum, but my initial experience with Pia sounds like yours. She would run away from me, wouldn't be caught, wouldn't eat food in front of me and would answer to her name ever. That was at one year, now she demands attention all the time, hates it if I cuddle Tara and not her and leaps three feet in the air to greet me. Yes now she is my pup, after 6 months. Keep trying Eleore it will happen. Good luck

Its not that unusual that a puppy doesnt want to spend much time with you are be affectionate. There are so many exciting things in the world that puppies just want to explore. You're around a lot more so he can see you anytime - he wants to play, play play. If you spend time with him just playing fun games he may come to you first.

Both mine lacked affection as puppies. Deska would wiggle to get away from me and Tully would just run off. Deska had spates of affection but basically until they passed their teens they were not that interested in me. I remembered my previous shelties and how super affectionate they were and found it a bit upsetting. But I guess I had forgotten the puppy stage. Roll forward to when my two are adults and they are so affectionate and clingy they often drive me nuts.

The affection will come - dont worry about it.

Dandie is 15 months and still does not cuddle. Chloe has cuddled from day 1. I guess it is all based on their personalities. I also believe that they become more open to cuddling the older they get.

Awww...I sooo know the feeling. I wish I knew about this forum when I had my second Sheltie (he's now almost 4). My first was what you were expecting, playful, snuggly, etc. But then again, now that he's older, he'll lie against you, but he's not a snuggler nor a kisser. But he is bonded to me more than anyone else.

As for the second one. You described my dog to a T at that age. Wanted absolutely nothing to do with me. I was heartbroken. My hubby also didn't like the dogs on the furniture, so I wonder if that had played a part in his not being cuddly. Because as soon as hubby allowed the dogs on the bed and couch, my second Sheltie has turned into a total cuddle bug. He can't lie NEXT to you, nope, he has to lie ON you (in some way). But seriously, it's like he NEEDS to be near us now.

So, just know that you'll bond more because you are the one doing the "daily" things. It'll just take some time. Also, what I learned to do is sit on the ground when my puppy was out and playing. That way, I was on "his level" and he'd come to me when he wanted to play with his toys, etc.

Don't worry. Even my non-cuddly dog still likes to lie next to me when I sit on the ground.

Wow... just, wow... . I never expected this kind of huge response... thank you so much!!

Looking back at the post, I'm really embarrassed... I was feeling really depressed (it was a complicated week), and posted without thinking. After that I went back to work (my vacation was over), so I didn't have a lot of time. I did visited, so I'm sorry for taking so long to properly reply to everyone >_<

@Sackett: You are absolutely right. By now I have a better understanding of his personality, and I think he gets me a little better too! I guess low spirits also lower my ability to use my head :P

@Mikos_Mom: You know, it's turning out to be exactly like you mention. Nothing drastic happened so far, but I'm indeed noticing that there are some things he will do only for me (like coming when I call him).

@danisgoat: After reading your comment, I wondered if he was being a bit distant because he felt I wasn't doing so well. Also, please be assured my method of scolding is a bit odd haha (For example, he bites, I say no and give him something he can chew, then congratulate him when he chews his toy as if it was the most incredible thing in the world).

@take4roll10: I didn't know Lucien had a clone out there! :P. I can relate to your experience; I have even begged him to "go to the bathroom" because it was 6am and I needed to go shower and change for work... .

@OntarioSheltie: Your response really calmed me down :). In particular, "I'd also bet if you move toward him he runs away" made me smile. I actually think I have lost weight chasing him hehe. I found that the best way to catch him was either to ignore him (he will come to me then) or go upstairs (he will bolt after me).

@Cindy: I really hope Lucien turns out to be like Gavin, he sounds incredible! Lucien was afraid of strangers until he realized that visits = playtime. I do let him know that that is not always the case. He is into the play > eat > sleep > repeat schedule thought! Even when he is really sleepy he tries to keep on playing.

@Chris: You are so sweet! I would have loved the hug, but your words were great for me too :). It does seem Sheltie puppies are more independent than others breeds. I'm liking it now!

@corbinam: I guess my first failure was not to realize Matt and Lucien are not only different breeds, but also different dogs. Thinking too much when you are not feeling well is definitely a bad idea (although, mistaking "breed standard" for "HE HATES ME" is indeed waaay to much drama, even for me! hehe).

@Bellesmom: If chewing equals love, then he must adore me! Being serious, it does seem I have an aloof little guy, although he is way friendlier by now. It seems he needed time, as you said.

@BB's_Shelties: Great suggestions! I will try implementing the cord idea; he is also a nightmare to catch. I never expected him to act like a lab, but I guess I did have some misconceptions about Sheltie puppies, and I couldn't help comparisons with Matt . Now that I know what I'm into I enjoy him way more, and I suspect he knows that :)

@Belladora: Your guys sound so cute! I hope Dodger's leg is better by now. Perhaps during the incident he realized everything was going to be alright because you cared for him :).

@Katherine: I have been following your suggestions, and we are making a little progress. Not about the pants issue, though haha. But he is getting more comfortable in my arms. And about the balls... he has a big one he loves, especially now he is actually big enough to carry it in his mouth! (oh God my baby is growing...).

@BarbV: I usually only tried to sleep or anything near him when he was already asleep. By now he got used to our quite time, just before he goes to bed :). It's really funny how he is sleepy, but still wants to play haha. Again, I think I sounded like I was killing him or something with the scolding mention haha... .

@Calliesmom: Thank you! It seems Sheltie puppies are programmed around the world for playing only :P

@SheepOfBlue: I read your comment to a friend and she was all "SEE? SEE?!". And yep, my timing for cuddling seems a bit off... winter, here we go!

@Justicemom: I think Lucien is turning out to be like Ember. He liked other people once he decided they meant playtime. It actually makes me feel special now haha.

@labgirl: Thanks! We both got our little boys at around the same time so I'm happy to hear (here and in other threads) that he is doing so well. He is so cute!

@nellie123: Thank you for your words :). I was having a very difficult week on a personal level, so I took Lucien "indifference" in a very, very bad way... .

@MavRyder: It looks like they are special in their own way. Also, your signature makes a lot of sense now haha.

@David: Thank you! I'll strive to success in this Sheltie love quest 8D

@*Caro: I can also relate with what you are saying... . So far it seems the puppy stage is very different from that of other dogs; but knowing that lets me enjoy it now :D

@k9kreationz: Yay for aloof puppies! xD. Lucien is all about playing. I do lie on the ground to play with him; he has now discovered I make an excellent chew toy and stepladder jaja. He sometimes climbs to my lap to get my nose!

Well, I just have the hugest smile on my face! I am SO HAPPY you're feeling better and are bonding with your boy. :biggrin2:

Well, this is a first! I don't think we've ever had a thread where everyone who responded got a personal response!

I thought this pretty cool! Sometimes when I respond to a thread I feel like I'm speaking to dead air. It was kinda nice to get the acknowledgement that you actually read what I wrote and took the time to respond.

Thanks for that! And I'm really happy for you that things are starting to work out. The first few weeks with a new puppy can be pretty scary. No different from bringing home a human kid. Same types of questions.

Take care!
