Iams ProActive Health Senior Plus

Murphy just turned 11 June 1st and we started giving him this new dry food for dogs 11+ years.......he's drinking a lot more water!!! Plus he's put on some weight (he's 38Lbs as of today). Thinking that may just be a lack of walks/exercise.... I haven't found anything linking the two- anyone else having same issues??? :confused2:

Also he's had 2 seizures too. Excessive drooling, inability to stand up, confusion (only lasted a minute)....although we are looking into a possible link of this to his Heartgard Plus or the Frontline Plus.

I'll tell you that I think all senior foods are a scam for people that don't know better. Sorry, but they are. Old dogs need good quality animal protein just like younger dogs.

If you look at the ingredient list:

(Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal (Natural source of Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine), Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Fish Meal, Dried Beet Pulp)

It's not a fantastic food. Meat (over-represented by weight here), grain, grain, grain, meat (overrepresented) grain. Not something I would feed to a healthy dog, let alone an older dog. Yes, the increased water intake is a result of the food, and the weight change is a result of the food.

Do you have a reason to go to this food other than it says 11+ on the bag?

I agree with Clantyre. If you read the ingredient list on foods you're considering it's an easier way to evaluate them than by the age they list on the label. Corn, wheat, soy, by-products are all unnecessary for your dog's health and contribute to weight gain and other problems.

A good resource is the Dog Food Advisor website, which rates food and gives you a list of ingredients and analysis. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/

Thank you Clantyre and Ann. We bought the 11+ food because he is older now, but we also given him the Proactive Health, Premium Protection and Healthy Naturals without any problems. This is the first time we've ever given him this. Plus- it's very small pieces of food (like the puppy food), it looks like cat food!

I had a bad experience with Iams too. It was the same thing your going thruogh. F-kap's normal weight I think was about 20 to 23lbs. I saw that he was getting a little chubby and tried to bring it down a bit but nothing was working. When I took him to the vet for his regular check-up I was completely shocked when he got on the scale, he weighed 48lbs! I thought I was going to be sick. I now feed them ProPlan. It's not the best of the best but it keeps them healthy and happy. F-kap is now down to 29lbs:biggrin2:! I'm VERY happy for that! Still has about 6lbs to go.
I recommend switching your dog's food, it will only get worse if you don't.
