If you knew then what you know about training now...

I haven't looked atThe links yet, agility doesn't interest me much but dog training does! Just last night I watched a Patty Ruzzo DVD from a seminar and it was on this very topic! Gone are the scruff shakes, collar grabs, leash pops. It just isn't necessary and I have two good dogs that I regret nothing. They are trained and shown with dignity and respect. I feel very good about that.

I would not listen to everyone and I wouldn't beat myself up if my dog can't do what they tell me. I learned that not everything works for every dog. No matter how great a trainer may be, sometimes, certain dogs just can't learn that way and need to try another way. It's not a wrong way, it's just a better way, for my dog.

Ember taught me this. Had I listened to certain people I would have ruined that dog for life. Our first 6 months together were hard but I really learned to read a dog and think before I act act. There is a difference between making them do something and encouraging them to think thought something when they want to quit.

I think I did ruin Koji.....on some things. But I've come a long ways since. I will try anything once and see what happens. It's then I will realize what is and is not working.

Oh yeah another thing....I'd learn foundation (for agility) before going to a trial, even though I'd really really really want to. Or I'd enter the things the dog could do, not what I hope the dog could do. ;)

If I could turn back time, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't have drilled self control into Romeo so much. I'm fairly certain that had I worked on building his drive then, he would be a different dog now. :(

a girl in the group of people I train with is on that page, that's pretty cool to see on here :D
She's got Mufaasa, a border collie/lab mix, what a sweet dog

I'd be more consistent about my performance requirements. Some things, such as independent weave pole performance, are still lacking because I didn't keep consistent requirements. I also had to go back and retrain my 2o2o for the same reason.

I'm trying to correct the consistency in Edan's Rally training which, I believe, is why he's doing pretty well in that event so far. Time will tell as we keep working on Advanced.
