Ignoring FINALLY Works for DH!

My husband is a musician and plays guitar. Every timne he tries to leave the house with a guitar case, Ellie goes nuts. She knows not to bite ankles, but that doesn't mean she hasn't found a way to be obnoxious.

She gets her "baby" and shoves it at DH with every step he tries to take. She pokes him in the legs with her nose. Granted it doesn't hurt like nipping, but it is annoying and he always has to weave through the house trying to avoid stepping on her.

He always uses a growly voice and say, "Stop" and he stops walking for a minute. She is totally riveted on his face and when he is stopped, he is a good stationary target, lol. She just keeps poking him with her nose, trying to get him to play instead of leave.

Last night, I, once AGAIN, told DH that he was giving her exactly what she wanted. ATTENTION. I told him to think about it. She wants you to stop, give her attention and not leave. So you are: stopping, giving her direct eye contact, speaking to her, and not moving.

So, on the second trip to the car, I said try not speaking to her, not looking at her and just stop and turn your back to her and don't move. When he did this, Ellie was totally bewildered. It was really funny. She cocked her head and stretched her neck forward and almost tiptoed to the front of him. He turned his back to her again. She stood stock still. He tried taking a few steps and she quickly picked up her baby and tried to poke him again and stopped and tuned his back. She sat. She could not figure this out. He quitely picked up the guitar case and walked out the door with Ellie just sitting and watching him go. He called me from the car sooooooo happy this worked!

IT IS A MIRACLE! When she was a pup she could care less about being ignored. Now, withdrawing attention is a big deal to her. Hooray!

That is really great! They are so smart it's incredible. They know exactly how to manipulate us to get what they want :wink2:. Good job on finding out what the trick was to make her understand what is wanted from her.

Just yesterday, as I was going around the house to get stuff done, Kyara kept on following me even though she was really tired and just wanted to sleep. She would walk to the room with me, plop down and close her eyes and when I would walk out she would make an annoyed sigh and follow me.

My BF commented that Shelties must think that we are soooo much work for them. Moving around needing to be watched, not listening to what they want us to do . Oh those hoomans!

I really do think the biggest punishment (that isn't cruel) you can give a sheltie is to ignore them! Honestly Deska thinks the world has come to an end if he gets ignored by a family member.

I love that she nudged him with her toy, that is so endearing. How hard was that for him to ignore - see you can train a husband!

Great news, so glad that things worked out so well! Maybe I need to try that with Brie, she goes crazy when someone leaves!
