I'm a bad mommy!

My vet recommended an aggressive dental program for my boy:

As treats, I gave him Hills Prescription t/d Dental Health dog food nuggets. (I guess you can use that as regular dog food too.) You can get that from your vet.

Once a week, I put Oravet Gel on his gums. You can get that from your vet, but it is also available by mail-order.

He was on antibiotic dental surge therapy, with (prescription) Clavamox pills. On the first through the fifth of every month, he got two doses daily.

The vet also recommended Greenies, and I gave him one every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

And he was cooperative enough to let me brush his teeth every day.

At least he is cooperative enough for brushing! Megan is not :no:. I will ask our Vet about different things for her to chew and rinses/spray's before we have to get them cleaned..
 
When I first got Hadley she had horrible teeth. Just gross. It is how I stumbled upon raw because i was curious how to avoid teeth cleanings as putting my dog under (and myself) really scares me. Maybe a bone (with lots of meat on it) will help but the thing the keeps raw dog's teeth clean also is eating huge pieces, like roasts, and allowing those tendons to floss the teeth.... That's the most important part, the flossing. I love when we go to tje vet and they give me a science diet treat n say that cleans their teeth! I just laugh and say thanks :). In reality, that thing is full of sugar haha! Just remember its really imp to keep then clean because it can cause infection, which leads to worse damage! Good luck!!
 
Just keep in mind that a lot of the suggestions on here are a good preventative, but sometimes if the plaque has built up a professional cleaning might be inevitable.

Bentley has always had bad breath, and his teeth get dirty very easily. We brush and scale his teeth. He is not much of a chewer, so even that isn't much help. Anyways, he too needs a professional teeth cleaning, and all the above methods can't fix his teeth right now. They can stop it from getting worse, but he does need his teeth cleaned. After a while the infection gets beneath the gums and even scaling and chewing can't help it.
 
I just ordered the Plaque-off -- sounds good! Layla -- aka "Breath of Death" hates the mouth spray, so we'll try this!

Tara at 8 years has less than perfect teeth. Our vet recommended Plaque-off and it has held her steady (no improvement) for last 2 years, so no vet cleaning and anesthetic required. Pia at two years is having it as a preventative - again vet recommended.

:o thank you for sharing about Bentley! Megan is not much of a chewer either so I think a teeth cleaning is going to have to happen :cool:. I suppose like kids/adults, some of us and our pets are more prone to dental issues than others. I was religious about my kids teeth brushing when they were little, but damned if they didn't have at least one cavity every visit :uhoh:.

We had our GR Tyler for 12 1/2 years and he only had to have his teeth cleaned once.

:lol: :lol:, that's Megan also, "Breath of Death". I guess you all convinced me, I'll order Plaque off as well.

BUT, I will start getting puppy Toby used to having his teeth brushed so maybe just maybe he won't be as bad!
