My 2 year old sheltie, Bear, seems like he just sleeps alot. So I want to play with him. We play fetch and tug a war but I think we need something else to play. I feel like playing more will make him happyer with me.. We might go to petco to look at games they have. Any suggestions on games y'all play with your sheltie? I want him to be a more happy, excited dog.

What about teaching him some tricks? Shelties are very smart and love to use their minds. There are several books on the market you can read up on about trick training, and I bet you could find some websites too. You two could build up your bond and have fun together while learning fun tricks you can show off to family and friends

Tons of stuff to do!

My guys just love to play "jump on Mom" which I'm evolving into jump and twirl (where I guide them into clockwise and counterclockwise circles - its a work in progress! :wink2:)

A few of on the forum have bought big balls for the pups to chase around the yard. I think Misfit Brian had some video or photos of it. (I've been meaning to get one, as my boys don't do "fetch" well together). Frisbee is great as well! What I love about the frisbee is when it lands the "right way", they have to work to pick it up and bring it back.

Tricks are always good

Finally, this link from GeeRome gives some other innovative ideas.

Wow..a 2 year old Sheltie that sleeps?? How'd that happen?? LOL

Do you have Kongs? Treat balls? mine love those...

You can play hide and seek...either hide treats around for him to find..or you can work on his "wait" command..then go hide and call him to come find you...or have some one hold him til you hide...

Turn the music up and dance with him...surprising Shelties can bust a move!! If you have some tricks he knows..have him walk "dance" around with you then have him do a spin...a sit..down...high five...lure him between your legs and weave....or just go with whatever he offers to do...

I try to get mine to do housework...thats not working out so well. They do like to get the mail..they get to carry the junk mail in.

Get a clicker and teach some tricks..giveing high fives is easy and useful...then they will hand ya a paw when its nail clipping time. A real show stopper is play dead..I shoot mine with my finger and say "bang"...I have a friend that asks them if they'd rather be married or dead..they drop dead..hehe

You could get another Sheltie..that always livens things up!! LOL

:lol:I soooo get you!

Thanks Crystal. We have lots of games. At the moment balls of wool are the thing - dogs just love them. Not only can they play tug but pulling them apart is fun too. Mine also like squeaky toys in a sock - they can play tug and squeak at the same time.

We also do the 'find the treat under the cup' game, 'I'm gonna get you' which is just me walking around saying I'm gonna get you and when I get them I ruffle their fur - they think its great. Someone here suggested hiding a treat/toy for them to look for so I have been hiding the everlasting treat ball around the house.

Tricks are fun. I do tricks with Deska and its good fun to put together tricks so they make a dance routine. And it helps establish a good relationship.

The best game my dogs like is the puppy treasure hunt - I hide treats/kibble around the house or yard and they go looking for them. It keeps them occupied for ages. You can also give him his kibble in a treat bottle so he has to work for his food. The good thing about these two activities is you can just use their normal food allowance so they dont put on weight with treats.

LOL - jump on mum, bounce on the bed, run around the coffee table, herding the broom. Yes they are good at inventing their own silly games.

Of course the best toy for a sheltie - IS ANOTHER SHELTIE!!!

ABSOLUTELY!

There is a great book out there, super easy, its called Click for Joy! It is used with the clicker, and each page is a new trick or game to do with your dog. It is super easy to do and you will be surprised as to how fast your dog learns! You can read more about clicker training on this web site: clickertraining.com and order any of their books, clickers etc.
