EW-w-w-w Barb, I don't know who I'm sorrier for, you or Indy! I guess maybe Indy because you can always leave and get away from the smell, but poor Indy, it follows him wherever he goes. I get to say fortunately for me that is one situation that Bambi never got into, so I have never experienced this problem first hand. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a successful remedy soon.

Well that stinks 
I've given many skunk baths, we used tomato juice. Thanks goodness none have been my dogs, hope mine never get it but I've never seen one in my urban neighborhood luckily.

Ahh, I don't envy you... the smell up-close is like burning tires.Happened to our dogs around 10pm, the night before a dog show (luckily, the girl who got the worst of the spray wasn't going to the show!).
As I recall, even with skunk shampoo and Massengill douche, the poor little dog still had a faint odor of skunk for a long time after, especially when she was wet.
Please give Indy a pat (from an arm's length, for now) from me.
Well two baths later and two skunk spay treatments....things are smelling a little better. But still not perfect. At this point not sure if its the dog, and what he might have rubbed up against before and after his first bath
I also got advice on using douche from another forum. So think tomorrow this will be the next treatment....
I'm another supporter of the hydrogen and baking soda. Used it on Honey and it worked great. (I think it also helped that she was in a bandana...It took a good portion of the spray)
For the house, boil some cinnamon, it's supposed to counteract the smell. You can also put out some dishes of apple cider vinegar, which is supposed to absorb it. Even if neither of those work in that manner, they're both strong scents that I would rather smell than skunk! (I used both when it happened, and it either covered the it up or removed it...)
When I was living with my parents after college, their boy got skunked really early in the morning. Unfortunately my mom can't smell very well, so she didn't realize it was all over him...thought it was just coming in from outside. Ended up waking me up it smelled so bad. It was on everything, it took almost two days before I could stand to be in the house!

I've got so many deodorizers going in my house now that its all I smell.....and frankly starting to smell worse than skunk!
I'm boiling some cinnamon per one suggestion.....hoping that it will help override all the other sprays and deodorizers I've sprayed everywhere.

What you buy in the store for peroxide is only 3% and it is diluted in the water. It won't bleach the fur.
peroxide baking soda, and dawn dishwashing soap. I had a cat get sprayed in the face when he was younger..not the brightest bulb on the tree..just make sure you dilute the peroxide or it will make his fur slightly red (he was a black cat). for the house ive been told pine smelling candles/sprays will reduce the smell of the skunk..but when they get damp/wet it will reactivate the odor for a bit.

Ok....I know I have a spray at my store that is supposed to neutralize it before you wash them down and spread the skunk oils. But I didn't have the spray. I had to put him straight into the bath. Fortunately, I had skunk shampoo. Not that it made a difference. I went to the store smelling like skunk even after his spray at 6 a.m., me bathing him at 6:05 and a shower for immediately after.
Eeeww! So memo to file......always keep skunk spray handy. Spray them first before you start doing the bath routine. And no I don't have tomato juice handy. I hate tomatoes!
I've sprayed him twice with the spray. Seems to help abit.
So Indy has had one bath this morning and in about 5 minutes he is going to get another bath with skunk shampoo.
Of course, Callan, the 6 month old puppy was a huge help in all this.....he was jumping all over Indy and spreading the smell.......Yikes!

Boots got skunked fall of last year.
Primary mistake was that after the initial Hydrogen Peroxide-Baking Soda application, I then immediately went into a bath-mode with the garden hose and more of the H202/BS solution.
Adding water to a skunk situation is about the worst mistake possible.
Spent the last 6-7 months using both homemade and store cleaners to try and get that smell out that seems to faintly come back when he gets damp.
Next time, I think the proper protocol is to maybe do the following:
1. Don't Panic! Easier said once you've experienced this once.
2. (moved up) Restrain your dog. They will try to rub it off on the ground, and end up rubbing it all over more of their body.
They won't die from having it on them a little longer, and just maybe that will make them remember. But it will help you if you can get the spots to stay on one place.
2. Get the dog out into the backyard, somehow the smell will stay in the garage even if you have paper/plastic down.
3. The worst part, use your eyes and nose to really figure out where the dog was hit. Get some good light on the subject, and try to visually verify where exactly they were hit, and where its managed to spread to. Smelling will be mighty difficult as its going to be pervasive, however you should be able to rule OUT some areas, which will save you time and $$ and effort and allow you to focus more on the problem areas.
4. Use what you want (except tomato soup which is mostly useless)and let whatever homemade or store solution dry on the dog.
Do not use water to remove after x minutes. Makes sense since ingredients are non-toxic, and adding water to oil isn't a good idea.
5. Just found this site, and really, really like the explanations which make scientific sense, and will give her/WSU suggestions a whirl.
6. Get down to the $ store and get you some extra pairs of those disposable latex gloves!
