Injured paw

Ever since the first time they saw a cat in the back yard, my dogs go tearing out the door and down the fence line, barking with great concern, of course. Last night was no exception, and somehow in all of his zeal, Jake hurt a hind paw. He was leaving faintly bloody tracks where he walked, so I cleaned it off with warm water but couldn't see where the skin was broken. I noticed that one nail was a little more pink than normal, but it didn't seem tender.

The bleeding had already stopped by the time he was cleaned up, I've looked closely at it a few of times since and really don't know exactly what hurts, I see no sign of infection whatsoever. My only worry he's favoring that leg, he's running on 3 legs and limps when he walks.

Of course if any hint of infection shows up we'll be on the way to the vet. Thing is, I've observed lately that whenever I call my vet, invariably they want me to bring my dog in. :-) In this case I'm not sure it's strictly necessary, in all likelihood he'll heal up in a few days, right? Otoh he's only 5, I wouldn't want my hesitance to turn out to be neglect that results in a permanent condition.

Any thoughts?

As I have the tenancy to RUN to the emergency vet or my regular vet when ever my boys come up lame...

I have now waited a day or two to see if it resolves.
Unless of course things get worse.

Best to keep a sharp eye out. Sometimes they just twist the wrong way and a day or two brings them back to normal.

Keep us updated and good luck! :fl

If he seems to be feeling better you could give him a day or two of no running and see if he improves. If not, off to the vet.

Thanks for your input! Historically I'm quick to head to the vet as well. But you know those visits when all they do is reassure you that it's going to be ok in a few days? I'm thinking I should be able to reassure myself for at least some of these. I obviously needed an extra bit of reassurance in this case... so thanks for that.

Thanks! No running is a tall order, I'm taking him out to do his business on a leash, which slows him down a lot, but when he and Brandy decide it's time to play... I'll do my best.

That happened to Lucky and Lady. Lucky went out the back door, it was icy
he was better in a couple of days. Lil' Lady I think she hit a crack in the yard
early in the year where the ground got so dry, she got better in a couple of
days too.

Keep an eye out. They like to worry us for even more attention.

How is Jake doing this morning?

Still limping? Hope not and he is on the mend with restricted activity!

Let us know... inquiring minds want to know!

He seems like he's on the mend, he's putting weight on that paw again, I can still tell he's favoring it a little, but definitely improved from yesterday.

Thanks for asking!
