Is hitting an effective training/behavior mod tool?

I would never hit my baby or yell at him for that matter. They are extremely intelligent. I sternly talk to him without yelling.
 
My boy, Gavin, trusts me completely.
He really tolerates ANYTHING I do because he knows I would never hurt him.
I would never do anything to change this.....
With Shelties, trust is everything. These little furballs are very much a 'partner' dog who wants to please their owner.
