is it normal for some shelties to...

My current Sheltie, Olive, is the only one I have ever had that really wants to play with other dogs. This is actually the first time I wish I had room for another dog because that would make Olive so happy. I don't think I did anything differently raising her as compared to all of my other shelties, but all of my other dogs were quite reserved around other dogs. If any other dog should deign to even sniff their butts, all of them would quickly sit on their butts and then run away. :lol: Olive, on the other hand, gets crazy excited when she sees another dog and initiates play behavior. She likes bigger dogs better than small ones, but she'll play with any of them. Because we don't have another dog, but have four cats, she 'herds' them (not that they like it very much :biggrin2:)
 
Can't say if its normal for sheltie or not but I have a GSD that has no interest in playing with other dogs either. She's lovely towards people, very gentle with other animals but she growls at Mozart (my sheltie) whenever he tries to engage her into a play. If she ever does chase him or approach him, it's to tell him she's the boss and assert her authority. She would tolerate Mozart if he is calm and sits by her but she doesn't initiate any friendly plays with him. When we are outside or at the dog salon or vets, she simply ignores other dogs.
 
My Edan doesn't have a lot of interest in other dogs though, within the past year, if a small group is running and playing he will run with them. I think he re-learned this behavior from his sister, CJ, who loves to run and play.

For the most part though, Edan could care less about other dogs.
 
I loved the article, I think its bang on, Beau really doesnt like other dogs being in his face, and when you say that to other owners, the response is always the same" Oh your dog is aggressive"
