Is my dog a full Sheltie?

Does your Shelite possess these traits?

I would say Poppy is 100% Sheltie (or if it's not, it's not showing) and very pretty! At 9 months, they go through their coyote awkward stage. Their coats don't come in for awhile (I think I'm repeating a post above). And even then, some just don't have coat. Koji, my sable, doesn't have much coat. If you looked at my album here, even at 2 years old, he looks like he's still waiting for his coat to show up. Usually the pointy ears are because they didn't tip (or you didn't tip them). No biggie. And if by bare belly, you mean little fur, that's fine at that age. If you mean hairless, that may be something else.

Height/Weight: There's not a lot of commonality; like people, it just depends on how you are built. My dogs are adults - Vogue is 14" (within standard) and 18lbs, Koji is 17.5" (too tall) and 21lbs. Miko was about 15.5" and a good weight was 18lbs. Shelties being a younger breed, there's lots that fall outside of the spectrum. I once met an 11" tall Sheltie. Was adorable next to Koji.

As for not barking, Miko didn't bark until he was 1yo. And then, he didn't bark unless someone was at the door. Koji only barks at the door (taught by Miko of course, haha) and when we play, or when he's telling me off (to get him food or to stop messing up in agility), oh, and at other dogs/people due to his leash aggression. Vogue barks for food or bathroom if I'm sleeping. Otherwise, mine are quiet. They bark way less than most Shelties that I hear about on here. I'm grateful. :)

Appetite: Y'know, Miko wasn't a big foodie. But the two that I have now will be your best friend if you give them food. Granted, Shelties seem to be food whores (can I write that word?).

I think Poppy is just fine at 9 months. She'll grow into her coat (give it another 1.5 years). She may find her voice, or if not, be grateful. If she's not into food, does she like toys? Usually shelties seem to go for one or the other (or both). The belly hair isn't thick, that I know of, just long once it grows out. And if she's small, hope it doesn't, like a previous poster, Vogue's fur picks up everything.

My Callie is now 4 years, and she's still very petite. I haven't measured her but I'm pretty sure she's less than 15 inches tall and has never weighed more than 15 lbs. She's always had the prick ears, a small appetite -- but definitely got more than her fair share of the Sheltie barking gene.

If this picture works, this is at our puppy training class when she was about nine months. Looks pretty similar to your little one.

Yeppers that's a sheltie, and what a pretty marked one she is. Now that I can see the pics, she is at that awkward coyote phase :) I'd say in a few mths she will grow into the full sheltie look. My girls always grew lots of undercoat probably because of where they have lived. They coated up more than their parents who didn't live in the higher elevations that we did. Count your blessings that you have a reserved barker. My smaller one tries to make up for her size by letting everyone know she is present, and will be heard. She is chatty and will have the last bark in every situation. All of mine got the sheltie famine gene, they are convinced famine will ensue and chow down fast and furious with the expectation that if they don't fuel up all at once starvation is pending. Mealtime is the main focus and event in their life, and they are convinced famine is on the horizon. I do get comments and rebuttal about portion size. :wideyed: It is fun to look back at the puppy stage. Savannah was an adorable puppy, I think her head is a bit too small for her body. It didn't catch up with her body growth. Kaleigh had so many outta proportion mths that I thought she was an ugly duckling. But now she is my pretty solid sturdy girl.

I think he is full sheltie, just eArs weren't trained (normally they get glued for the first 9-12 months), and undersized but that can happen even if not bred for. Beautiful color coat. Hair will come in, maybe not an extreme coat but you could get surprised but i think it looks like it will not be skimpy as an adult. Plus just hitting time for winter coat growth. Do you live where it is warm like me? We are just getting cool enough (meaning out of 80s) to start the under coat coming in. Sometimes a skimpy coated pup will surprise you by two or three. Sheltie fur takes that long to mature. Most shelties will have a big shed somewhere between 12-18 months with a big coat change. He looks like a sweet pup!
