The Book Arrived

This book will be the bes thing that ever happened to your sheltie:

http://www.amazon.com/Help-Your-Shy...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257041740&sr=8-1

This book uses shelties and herding dogs as examples a lot. Please don't get rid of your sheltie! Read/borrow this book and give the suggestions in it a try!

The book arrived today - it's already been helpful as it is telling me that we are taking the right approach by not pushing Buddy. I also was able to contact a responsible breeder here and she will help us evaluate his needs and if we'll be able to get him secure, happy and trained!

Thank you everyone once more for all your help. I love him so much!!

I just wanted to share with you about my sheltie Ruckus.

Ruckus came from a show mill (breeds show dogs 6 bitches at a time, every heat, having 60+ dogs at a time) Ruckus was under socialized and never left the house until when I got him at 5 months old.

As soon as I brought him home I noticed something was not right. This poor dog didnt move for two days. he would just stand there looking at the floor. when he got tired of standing, he laid down.
This dog never wagged his tail, wouldnt play, and was scared of everything.

He was scared of socked feet, words starting with "v" sound, soda cans, drinking glasses, you name it!

When Ruckus got older he even became aggressive. he was a dangerous dog.

Two trainers suggested putting him down, just putting him out of his misery.

Then a friend of mine was telling me about amitriptyline. its an anxiety medication for dogs. I went to my vet, Ruckus was diagnosed with a chemical imbalance and an anxiety disorder.

I gave him the meds, and for the first time... his tail wagged :)

If I would had gave up on him he would not had been here with me today! If i gave him to a shelter he would surely be put down. and if I gave him to someone, they may have decided on putting him down also.

I am not telling you to dope your puppy up, I am just telling you please dont give up!

After all that horribleness with Ruckus, he is a calm, sweet, loving boy :)

I heard of show mills recently. What is even sadder is many of the puppies are put down because they cant find buyers for them. They are far more interested in breeding a top show dog that they tend to have pups left over they cannot sell. I was amazed that registered breeders could get away with this. So Ruckus was doubly lucky that he found you.

the breeder brags about having over 400 dogs championed.
its true....

but people fail to see that for every 400 dogs that are championed there are probably 1,000 that are not.
so you do the math....

(I have no idea if that ratio is right, but usually half of a litter do not champion right?)

Thank you for sharing your story about Ruckus - it gives me lots of hope! The Show Mills are something I hadn't heard of - how awful - to breed and breed just to get show dogs. It's so sad.

Wow, I never heard of Show Mills either!
Thank you for sharing Rucks's story with us. He's one lucky pup to have found you.

This makes me so mad. Those terrible, horrible people! You know what? That horrible man/woman who bred Ruckus doesn't deserve to have the privilege of owning such a great dog. That's their loss. Ruckus is very lucky to have you.

I've never heard the term "show mill", but it does not surprise me in the least bit.

I'm really glad you are taking steps in the right direction. I really hope it works out. :) Please keep us updated.

An Update on Buddy the Shy Sheltie

You've all been so kind and helpful about our puppy I wanted to update you. I've been reading the book and putting the advice to good use. He is doing somewhat better with his fear. I also contacted a good breeder here in Spokane and she and her mother are going to come and do a home visit and assessment to help us out. They also coordinate rescue in this area. It may be that Buddy needs a different home - he can run like the wind. It's beautiful to watch - he should be doing something really active and it isn't possible for me to be very active with him.

He's a wonderful pup - we love him so much. He's been with us for three months but our older Sheltie still hates him. He just won't leave her alone. Arrrrrrgh.

Thanks again for all the support!
