Is there a "Sheltie" collar?

Since Bailey is still a puppy and asks to go out like 15 times a day, I leave her harness on all day. I only take if off at night or if no one is going to be home for an extended period of time.

There's no point in taking it on and off and on and off. Also, since she tries to eat everything in sight, I have to pull her back often, so I don't want to use a collar.

Once she is completely trained and can go out in the yard by herself, I will only use a collar...not sure what kind yet.

That's a good idea. I left the collars on mine all day for the same reason - easier to drag them back inside or catch them. But I had to take them off once their manes grew and it started getting lost under the fur. Maybe I should leave Deska in his harness in the evenings so I can catch him when he runs into the backyard to bark.

Is that just a regular collar? Could somebody please explain what a martingale collar is? Is it kind of like a choke chain? Like when you pull it it tightens around the dog's throat? :confused2:

I'm thinking maybe I'll get the paracord instead. :yes:

Brad bought Annie Laurie the kangaroo martingale collar and leash -- lovely! Now he's ordered them for Layla and Bits -- hooray!!!

The paracord collars are slip collars -- yes, like a choke chain. Martingales have a chain "loop" that connects both ends of the leather (or whatever). The snap ring for the leash is on the chain. When the dog pulls, the collar tightent. It's great for dogs like Annie Laurie, whose head is smaller than her neck. Little pin head! :lol:
 
A martingale collar is a non-choke semi-slip collar. It is designed to only tighten enough to prevent the dog from slipping the collar WITHOUT choking them as they pull.

I've used Martingales for years, even before getting a Sheltie. I started using them when Melody started to get older and standard collars choked her. It worked great! I've been using one on Edan since the day we brought him home.

I did notice on that site that they have a martingale show lead with an adjustable head loop. :uhoh: I do not need another leash...I do not need another leash...I do not need another leash...
 
Honestly, if I buy anything, it'll probably be a standard leash and collar. I like the Martingale lead I currently use at agility. I seriously considered the show lead but since I use it for agility, it gets thrown around when you take it off the dog (you toss it behind you for the leash runner to take to the exit of the ring). Also, I take him for actual walks more than I use the show lead so I'll get more use out of the actual lead and collar.

My problem is, I have to figure out how to justify the cost to my DH.
 
What on earth is Sheltie Colar ?? is it Prong colar ? or made specially made for sheltie's long coat ???:confused2:

I think the post was originally started to find the best collar for her dog that is not going to slip over the dog's head. As many of us have said, a martingale is the best collar for a sheltie because they can tighten up but not choke a sheltie. As it has been said in another thread, prong collars should never be used on shelties, they are not a big dog and do not need a prong collar. Over kill in my opinion.
