joint supplements?

Shelby's mom

Shelby is now 3 years old and is a very active pup. She loves to run around the yard like a maniac especially when a train goes by. We also do some agility for fun as well as daily walks and play.

Since she is so active do you think it is a good idea to get her on a joint supplement now? Sometimes she runs so hard and tries to turn but she falls and rolls over. We do notice that on occasion when she has been extreemly active she limps just a bit. After a few days of rest she is fine. The vet can't find anything so we figure she just injures herself running so hard. Our last Sheltie had hip ssues when she got old and I would like to prevent this if possible.

Thanks for your input.

I agree with Chris.

Vibrant Pets has been a godsend for our Mally's joints.

If we should miss one day, we can tell the difference.

We gave our last dog Happy Hips, and his arthritis actually improved to the point where he got most of his mobility back for the last two years of his life.

Dr. Maggies or Bio Vets have pretty good review.

But also check your food. A food that has supplement of glucosamine and chroiditine will support hip and joint growth in a younger dog. I agree that an older dog may need additional supplements.

Thanks everyone. I didn't think about checking her food. We are going to start her on some Cosequin and see how she does.

She was limping off and on today. But she had a very busy weekend with alot of running and playing. For all I know she could hve stumbled in a rabbit hole. I have checked her thouroughly and she does not wince in pain at all. Just favoring that one leg at times. She was hearding like I have never seen before playing with a 5yo friend of the family on Sat. They played for hours, they were inseperable.

She has to go to the vet for her yearly visit this week so if she is still limping I will have him check again. For now I am just making her rest and trying not to let her run and jump.

Per a few vets' recommendation (familiar with performance dogs), our dogs get the following:

1 T coconut oil
1 fish oil capsule (1000mg)
1/2 t Phyto Flex which contains MSM, glucosamine and perna mussel
1/8 t Canine Musculoskeletal Support
2 capsules per day of Ligaplex-2 (we are about to run out of this and will discontinue going forward).
