Kiko is 3 1/2 months old now and still can not jump on to our chair. Or mini dachshund was able to accomplish this when she was 3 months old (Shes 4 1/2 months old now and still smaller than Kiko). She tries and tries to jump up but just cant do it. Some times she will jump to early and other times she just doesnt accomplish it. The chair is 15" from the floor to where you sit and Kiko is 10" from the floor to the top of her back/shoulder? I dont know how to measure her, but from the ground to her back is 10". I know she is small but I just want to make sure nothing is wrong.

edit: I googled how to measure a dog and I guess I did it right. The top of the withers which is pretty much the top of the back to me. She is between 9.5" and 10" I cant really get her to stand still

I wouldn't worry a bit about this. Some of our Shelties learned to climb stairs at 3 months, and some at 5 months! The same with jumping up on things. It's not much different from children...they are all individuals and develop differently, even if they have the motor skills. If your pup moves well otherwise and acts normally, just give her some time. Trust me, one of these days soon you'll be wishing she didn't know how to jump up on everything!! The furniture in our house is owned by the dogs...

Actually its a good thing she isnt jumping. Her limbs are still developing and its better not to be jumping up and down on things (could cause arthritis when she is older). At this age my pups didnt jump onto anything taller than them. Now that said, some dogs do have a natural inclination to jump, but I would listen to her if she is hesitant jumping. Place a little box or a big book or something else as an intermediate step for her. She will probably start jumping when she feels comfortable.

Thanks a lot. Yeah she definitley seems, atcs, and plays like she is fine. The only thing that worries me big time is her weight (4.2lbs). She eats plenty of food and she doesnt look skinny or anything but she just isnt gaining weight very fast.

Wait another month and she will have a spurt. Both mine had a growth spurt - both in height and weight - between 4-5 months. Has she hit the gawky looking stage yet?

PS - what is atcs? My internet lingo isnt that good. Ta

I got Lacey when she was 16 weeks old and she couldn't jump on the couch. It was so funny because around that time I was also babysitting a mini dachshund for a couple of weeks. That little 9 pound dog can jump. You don't leave a kitchen chair out because she will be up on the table. She is a major chow hound. She would always go for the couch when she had enough of being Lacey's newest chew toy. It was payback for the little doxi. She had tormented my prior Sheltie when she would come over when she was a puppy(the doxi).

Lacey finally learned how to time her jumps. Until then it was fairly comical. Kind of a belly slam into the couch cushion. I told her we should have called her Grace. Even now she pulls some missteps on the stairs. I thought maybe because she never had to navigate stairs or was allowed to jump on the furniture when she was really young. But then again maybe she is just a klutz. The other day she fell off the curb because she was so intent on a crow in a tree, that she wasn't watching where she was going.:rolleyes2:

If I remember Diva couldn't jump on anything until she was around 4 months. She just couldn't firgure out the right angle. One day she was chasing my cat though the house right up into the futon and then onto the back of the futon in one motion. I seriously thought she was going though the window.:eek2:

After that she was on everything. If you were wondering where Diva was look up. I oftened wished she never learned to jump up on things. As long as she is running around fine, don't worry your pup will get it.

Pups go through an awkward stage and it sounds like that's exactly where your pup is at. She's just uncoordinated right now and if you say she seems thin, she's probably at that stage where she's growing into her legs. Caro is right, she'll have another growth spurt soon enough and will not only be jumping on the couch, but will also be using at as a jungle gym or spring board

btw, my Ginny is approx. the same age and on the small side, height wise. I weighed her the other day and she's up to just over 6 lbs. (she just had a growth spurt, I swear I can SEE her growing), and no where near being able to jump up on the couch.
