My Pyper at only 4 years old started having terrible digestive issues. They have done every test and then chalked it up to food sensitivities. The vet put her on one of their "prescription diets". It was fine for a while, but I wasn't happy with the nutritional value in that food.

My friend had discovered this retired vet who, in his retirement, had done a ton of research on dog nutrition. He has developed 2 cook books. One for Raw foods and one for cooked foods. He also sells the supplement powder that needs to be added to his recipes and the omega 3 oils.

I started Pyper on his recipe....the one he suggested was the most hypoallergenic and the results have been amazing! her digestive issues have all but disappeared. She has had a couple of set backs that were brought on by stress.

Along with solving her digestive issues, I have noticed that her coat is so luxurious, and her skin is not flakey or dry anymore. I have Lexi on 50/50 home made food and Merrick Classic. She has always had a dry cracked nose. Her nose is back to black and wet!

The only reason I haven't put Lexi on all home cooked is because of time constrains in cooking so much food.

Anyway, for what it's worth to any of you who are struggling with similar issues, here is the web site....

wow, great phrase...control the bowl....I learned that with my aging sheltie who came up with so many issues in her latter years. I cooked for her to prolong her health. It made such a difference. I visited the site and liked it :biggrin2:

My DH got me a book a few years ago on cooking for dogs. Mostly treats but he also has recipes for certain health problems and broths for ill dogs, to encourage them to eat. Thanks for the link, I'm interested in adding home-cooked food for my dogs, maybe for one of their two meals a day.

I feed 50/50 to Lexi and she has enjoyed the benefits, but it's easier for me to manage the cooking, because a batch lasts a little longer this way. I also have a friend with GSDs and she feeds 50/50, also. It is a good option!

Thanks for posting--it's a great resource for sure! If we ever get Bentley off of the prescription food (:ick) then we will definitely be referencing this information!

I've read the labels on some of those prescription foods, and they all seem to be so nutritionally poor, especially those diet foods!
