Kennel cough

My youngest boy Shoka (4 months) has kennel cough. He has been coughing since last Tuesday. It is a very very mild case of kennel cough and the only symptom is a small cough. He has been jumping on the furniture and chasing the other dogs around the house as usual. I had him at the vet on Friday and he was given some medicine.

My other dogs haven't shown any symptoms yet and I was wondering if anyone knows how long it would be before they are in the clear? I would love to get back to training with Simba this weekend coming, if at all possible, after a long Christmas break but I would not want to risk spreading the infection. Can dogs that don't have it still spread it? We also have our first obedience trial of the season on Saturday and Simba had an amazing end to last years season so I was pretty excited to getting back to it.

All of the other dogs had a pretty bad case of it last summer and they have all been vaccinated against it in he last 6 months, although Shoka was too and still managed to get it!

KC has been running its course through where we live. Owners were told to quarantine dogs for 3 weeks, even if they weren't showing symptoms. If dogs are exposed, it can lay dormant for awhile before manifesting itself.. just like any other disease. I would run it by your vet, but if it were me, I would quarantine my dogs just to be on the safe side!

Ok thanks for the advice. My vet did say that Simba could go to the show at the weekend but my friends vet told her to keep her dog home even though it is her other dog that has it. I was told to quarantine Shoka for 2 weeks but it was ok to bring Simba to the park. Also do you know if it can be carried by humans? On clothes or skin? I was visiting a friend with a young un-vaccinated puppy last week, I did have a clean jumper and trousers on that had not been in contact with Shoka though.

Since Kennel cough is highly contagious - and dangerous for puppies. Here in Denmark - dogs do not stay in public places before they are completely healthy.

A dog with kennel cough can infect other dogs as long as it is itself is ill - ie the dog will basically be able to infect others, as long as it have symptoms.

Some types of kennel cough, however, an incubation period of 5-10 days (the time from the infected for symptoms occur) where the dog also can infect. Therefore, an asymptomatic dog easily infect other dogs.

In practice, the items of infection period, typically 3-8 weeks, but in cases where the disease is difficult to fight infection in the dog can be as high as 14 - 15 weeks.

bordetella

My 1st sheltie got that 2X, I bordered her twice, and even though she had been given bordetella vac as a requirement of boarding, she came home with a wicked cause each time. Refused to board her again. It is highly infectious so be very careful. Not easy on them either once they get infected.

Missy was exposed to it at a flyball tournament in May. I keep her home, away from other dogs, for 2 weeks. I called the vet because I was paranoid about multiple dog households (like, think 5+ dogs) having it go around their house and bringing dogs that still might be carrying it to the June flyball tournament. She said it shouldn't be a problem as long as those owners used good hygiene. Missy is vaccinated with the intranasal bordatella. But it's like the flu shot.. she can still pick up a different strain. Plus I think I remember something about there can be viral or bacterial bordatella? It's been a while since my panic. Luckily Missy never got it.

Dr. Shelli will tell you that she's around dogs with that all the time (she's a vet at a humane society I think). Her dogs haven't gotten sick from the many things she brings home.

Thanks for all of the replies :smile2: I'm still wondering though if it is ok to bring Simba (non infected dog) to training at the weekend? It will have been 2 weeks since Shoka contracted kennel cough and Simba and my other 4 dogs have shown no symptoms. Shokas cough has also cleared up completely. I am aware that kennel cough is highly infectious and so Shoka has stayed home for the past 2 weeks and will do so for another week but what I really want to know is can Simba interact with other dogs? Thanks in advance :smile2:

Thank you for the reply. My puppy was exposed to kennel cough 9 days ago and none of other dogs have shown syptoms. Do you think that by Sunday, 14 days after contracting it, if my asymptomatic dogs still aren't showing symptoms it would be ok for them to go training? The puppy will obviously stay home. My vet said it is ok but others seem to be saying it isn't.
