Kidney Failure

Welcome to the forum! And I'm so sorry for your loss!

I agree that yearly CBC is not a bad idea for older dogs. At least it allows you to make a decision as to whether to pursue further treatment or not.

In my case, like yours, I did not find out about Timber's tumour until the day he died. Yes, it was that sudden. Perhaps more in depth analysis would have identified the problem sooner and made vet treatment possible. That being said, he was 12 and I truly did not expect more than 1 or 2 years more. So would I have done anything different had I known? I'm not sure. But I least I would have had the choice.

Thank you for posting this reminder.

I know the feeling

Hello,
I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my first sheltie love (Shelby) last Dec 9th to kidney failure. She had just turned 8 that July. We had recently moved to a new area and found a wonderful vet who immediately did blood tests, and we went on to x-ray, sonagram, and then needed a biopsy. The vet was very up front in that it is unusual to have a sheltie this young with renal failure and since I'm an oncology nurse, I wanted her checked for cancer. Anyways, I did hydration at home until it just wasn't helping. She died lying beside me in bed around 1245 in the morning. I was devastated to say the least and still get teary if I think about her too much.
I think if you have a good vet, and you keep up with vaccinations, and yearly checkups, you will do well.
Again, I'm sorry for your loss - I know how it feels.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on Angel's passing. She shaped your heart and helped make you who you are -- that's an amazing legacy. Snickers will benefit from Angel's love.

We are so sorry for your loss. There are many of our sheltie angels waiting at the bridge for your dear Angel. Our Cleveland went quickly as well and I have wondered since if blood work earlier on would have shown the cancer.

Welcome to our forum. There are wonderful people here and we are glad to have you with us.
