We had the same problem...I didn't want Bentley to even breathe on me! We tried the covered litter box and the dog just dove right in and pushed the lid off the top!
I guess we could have used an x-pen or baby gate, but we already have enough of those in the house so we settled on the Clevercat litter box.

It's awesome. Bentley can't get in and the cat has no problem. It also reduces the amount of litter that gets kicked around.

We have Bumpers litter & food dish in our bedroom. We also liked the idea that Janet had,using the rubbermiad tote,and have tossed the idea around,but Bumper is blind,and we did not think she would go over the top to get inside.To date we have not had one problem with Trapp.
He has gone in the bedroom,but 98% of the time I had been in there or Brian,and when he would even "think" to take that first step over there,we have abruptly said a sharp "no". Now he has eaten Bumpers food,that was a real big issue for a few times,but has since stopped.
I can't gate to room safely for Bumper,as blind cats will not climb over one. Due to the fact they don't know whats on the other side, plus if she does try to scale it, the only way she will come down would be backwards. And I can't take the chance she would probably either get hurt, or scare the bejeebers out of herself,and we would be back to square one with her.
We went thru a period with her just about 3 weeks before Trapp came home,that while we were gone one day,she got scared of something. Still to the day we do not know what it was.But what ever it was,she would not walk out on the bare floors,and to make matters worse,she was petrified of being on the bed or any kind of blankets. She literally got frantic. She stopped purring,we could not hold her,comfort her,nothing. Our vet told us she may have had a small stroke while we were gone,or possibly a seizure.
If I do gate the room,it prohibits her to have free roam of the house,and she would be in the bedroom all the time,or stuck on the oposite side of where her food & litter is.

Ashley,that is quite the set up~ Very clever. And is actually the same thing Janet uses,but without the lid.
I really like the idea of the rubbermaid bin it would be less messy, although due to Mav's..euh... Heftyness, I dont know how well that would work... his litter though is in our storage closet(we leave the door open) I believe baby-gating it would be the best way to do it... Thanks guys !!
I feel a bit daft, this is such an obvious solution hahah
I too used a giant rubbermaid tub for Panda and he was 22 pounds! He was easily able to get into it and Meggie never even tried. Still miss my big fat boy so much!
Oh the added benefit of the rubbermaid tub is there is not as much litter on the floor around the box. The high sides contain it. Plus if you cat is big, it's a nice size potty.
