I am sure this has been discussed but..... My 5 year old male. Barkley gets tangled knots in his fur directly behind the base of the ear. He hates me trying to comb them out. Actually they got so bad that a groomed had to shave them out. Any preventative measures I can take? Is the "detangler" sprays any help with this?

Sca suffered that bad when he was young. Two things helped. One was baby powder to dry the oil. The other I use to this day on ears for everyone and good for other areas. Actually got a second that I brought to flyball tournaments....that has a slightly chewed handle by Angus eater of all.

Blueberry gets mats behind the ears as well! I’ve found some baby powder (or cornstarch) dusted before brushing helps to get them out using a very fine tooth comb (almost a flea comb…you want the tines close together). If that doesn’t work I run the scissor blade (carefully) through the knot…I do not cut rather I use the blade like a knife, running it right through where the mat is. Then I comb and repeat if necessary. This way you’re not left with a big gap with no fur but you get them out. Daily combing is the only thing that’ll keep them from getting bad.

I heard but have not tried someone said using a drop of dishsoap on the tangles to get them to loosen up then of course wash out the soap- not sure if it works but that is on thing I 've heard, Our pups both get them and we try to work on them but the tangles win out and they really bother the dogs.. I need to just give the spoap a try and the cornstarch sounds like a good idea as well.
