Hi everyone,
Well Chinook had his surgery on Monday. He was also neutered at the same time. I was going to wait to neuter him when he was 2, but I figured why put him through more anaesthesia and pain later. He seems to be doing well. He hops around on three legs. He tries to put his left leg down, but he can't due to pain (which is good for now - he is not supposed to start putting any weight on it until two weeks or so the vet said.) The sparkle in his eyes came back on his second day home. He is acting a little more like himself, but you can see that he is a bit 'depressed'. I can't allow him to play with Maia, and the incision is bothering him and he can't scratch and lick it, so he lays around looking up at you with sad sheltie eyes.
The vet was pleased with how the surgery went. He said that he did not cut any ligaments and muscles when he was removing the affected bone, so Chinook should recover a little quicker. Chinook was a perfect little patient according to the vet techs. He rested quietly and did not make a peep to complain. I went to visit him the day of the surgery to bring him his food. He ate well, but then all he wanted to do was leave. He would not settle down, so I figured I'd better leave. It broke my heart
to leave him there again, but I had to.
I posted a photo of him in his collar in his album. The collar is great - it's an inflatable ring - reminds me of a life preserver, but its soft and allows him full neck and head movement, and he does not bump into things.
Well that is all for now. I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Hopefully in a few weeks, he will be without the collar and able to walk and play a little more.
