Leg Spasms

My Sheltie is only 2 1/2 years old. As far as I can tell he is a healthy dog. However, it has come to my attention that he has been having what I think are leg spasms. The spasms are just one kicking motion always in one of the hind legs. When I first saw it I thought he was just stretching or had an itch. However, one night he was laying in between my legs and all of a sudden one of his legs spasmed, the kick was hard enough to leave a bruise on my thigh the next day. The fact that he was practically asleep at the time made me realize the movement was involuntary. Then, on accident, I came across some information saying that Shelties sometimes have leg problems. Should I be worried? Or, is this just from running around too much that day or something and is a normal occurrence for Shelties? The "spasms" aren't exactly frequent (I would say I witness at most 3 or 4 a week). Thanks in advance.

Well, I don't know about dogs, but people do get muscle spasms from low calcium and magnesium. If there is no definitive diagnosis, I'd get those tested.

Is it only happening when your dog is sleeping? I would think that if it is, then I would think that he is dreaming and running in his sleep. My girls do this often when they are in a deep sleep. If that is the case, I would think that there isn't much to worry about.
