Lil' Lady and The Skunk

I was reading the posts and last night (late) Lil' Lady got hit. No I was not prepared. She comes in smelled up the house.

I had to wait til the vet opened to get some Skunk Off, by the way it worked great. Now I have to wash everything.

As I was reading the skunk posts, I thought boy have I been lucky. Well I will blame you all for jinxing me. Not being being prepared that late at night without a shampoo. I was mad at myself for not having it on hand. The critters are plentiful around here. Must have been a wild breeding season.

When I went to the vets I bought two bottles. The gal was laughing as I was explaining to her the stench.

Now I gotta run and do bedding and such she laid on. Wonderful morning in the neighborhood.

WARNING: Be Prepared!

Just an FYI - The longer you leave them with skunk spray on their skin and in their fur, the harder it is to get the smell off. Even just using dish soap, tomato juice, pop or just about any home remedy you can find online is better than not treating them at all for several hours, especially since skunk spray can be extremely irritating to the skin and eyes, if they get it in the face.

Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap did an excellent job of removing the stink from Toby and Ginny when they were sprayed a couple of nights ago. Just in case you or anyone reading this thread gets caught without a deskunker in the future. :smile2:

Skunk Off worked for you? I think I tried that when Chelsea got her 'Badge of Honour', but I sure didn't get it to work. I seem to recall smelling skunk inside for a week or more.

The warning is definitely appropriate!

Indy was skunked last year and I was totally unprepared. It only takes being skunked once to make sure you have product on hand.

The other warning is to know the signs when your dog has been skunked. I missed Indy's howl of distress when I let him back in at 5:30 a.m. He tore into the house and instantly starting rubbing himself against every piece of fabric furniture in my house.

I'm now fully equipped with skunk shampoo (Orange Apeel - marvelous!) and Knuk Out ...this product is even better than Nature's Miracle......it even works on stinky tennis shoes!

Does any one know the shelf life of the commercial "de-skunk" solutions if they are unopened? I have a bottle that a friend gave me a few years ago when her dog died. I have been fortunate enough to not need it, but I am wondering if it would still be good if I did need it. I like the idea of just having it on hand.

I had to shampoo her twice because Lady has a coarse thick coat, but yep it worked thank goodness. I agree though I should have done something sooner but I ran to the vets first thing this morning. I read the receipe for the peroxide dawn and baking soda, I didn't like using the peroxide for fear I would bleach her hair. Thats all I needed instead of a mahogney, Lady would be a blond.

I was so upset, never in all the years being raised with dogs or having dogs never did I ever have this problem, I was frantic to be truthful.

Needless to say, I will always be prepared.

I don't think there is an experiation date on shampoo, but I would keep it until you really need it, even if it would be a bit weak from the shelf life.
At least you have something to use until you buy new.

Again I wonder how long some of the shampoos have been sitting on the shelf. The bottles I bought today from the vet looked pretty good and not weak. I think that is why it worked so well.
