Lily's Evening Out

Last night DH and I went to the auction and since we were going to be away from the house for several hours we decided to take Lily with us instead of putting her in "Puppy Prison." Since it was the Thanksgiving Pot Luck there were extra people there, around 150. This is a great place for socialization because of all the people and noise and most everyone loves dogs. Lots of pets and loves.

The ride there was uneventful, no car sickness. She was alittle timid at first but once we got inside and seated she seemed to love it. She loved all the love and attention that was showered on her. Even put up with the little boy that has Autism that tried to choke her to death. She didn't bit or growl when he did this, just looked up at me with the look that said "Mom help me." I was the one that was freaked out. It was hard not being upset while I was trying to pry the little hands loose and get the Mom's attention to come and get her child. Li'l was a trooper through it all.

I know socialization is so important but I feel so bad when she gets car sick. But it looks like she is starting to enjoy the outings. When we got home DH took her harness off (so she wouldn't chew it off) and when he picked it up to put it away Lily ran to the door. It was like, are we going out again!

No car sickness on the way home either. I will take her to work with me again soon and see how she does on a longer car ride.

WTG, Lily!!!!!! It sounds like you were the "belle of the ball" and brought a lot of smiles to everyone. Thankfully you weren't seriously hurt by the little boy with Autism who was probably trying to hug your neck in the only way he knew how...that must have been a little scary for you...but you certainly handled it well for a wee lass. And the no car sickness is a biggie...my Faelee still gets sick on any ride that is more than about 20 miles...but that is a big improvement from her initial 5 miles max before vomiting.

Yes it was scary. I am very proud of Lily and can't wait to take her out more often. She will be 7 months in a few days. MacGreggor her half brother loves to go to the auction and to work with me. He got car sick until he was about a year old. Lily doesn't have too much longer, hopefully. Our other two, Maddie and Saddie love to ride in the car. In fact Miss Maddie has traveled over 1 million miles; She used to travel with us when we were long haul truck drivers.

Wow... Maddie was a well traveled lady! Years ago we had friends who did cross county hauls in their big rig and they had 2 shelties who always traveled with them and loved every minute of it. They especially loved the truck stops where all the other drivers gave them treats! :)

It is interesting that yours typically get over car sickness by 1 year...I have heard many other sheltie owners say the same thing. My Faelee will be 3 in January and we are still far from that goal. Years ago we owned another sheltie from Faelee's line who was violently car sick until she turned 12 and lost her hearing. After she became stone deaf she could ride anywhere for any length of time and she was never even queasy. I know our inner ears have a lot to do with balance, but it seemed weird and even our vets weren't sure why the complete change. I am really hoping that with continual happy short trips Faelee won't have to be a deaf senior before she rides well!!! All my other shelties have always loved going places in the car.

Are the auctions you go to held outside?

Auctions are held inside. We like to go even if we don't find things to buy.

I wonder if Lily thinks they held a big party just for her  It's nice to hear she did so well, that's are a real milestone for her.

My first 2 shelties used to get car sick even on very short trips. I think it was my fault as I got them both in the winter and did not take them out in the car very much at all until spring. They never did get over it, in spite of all the things I tried ( meds, daily short trips to acclimatize, not feeding before hand…)

With my next sheltie I took her out every day starting with the 2 hour trip home from the breeder. She never ever got car sick and travelled from Calgary to Ontario with us by car every summer. I am doing the same thing with Hanna, we do an hour car trip about 3 times a week and so far she has only got sick once. It wasn't repeated so I think it wasn't the car ride but something she ate that day. What she has done one time I left her waiting in the car was to poop in the cup holder and cover it with a napkin  Clever girl!
