Limber tail?

Yesterday afternoon Luna started acting funny, not sitting, ears down, and a tail that looked like it was broken. I took her to the vet this morning (couldn't get her in yesterday) and the vet said that the tail is not broken. He said her anal glands were possibly a little infected and that since she is in heat and the tail is not too painful she has a condition called limber? tail. He gave me 8 .75 mg dex tabs. I didn't catch the full name of the medicine. Her weight is just under 63 lbs. She was feeling much better today and sitting again. Has anyone heard of this limber? tail? p.s. Luna is, according to the vet, a lab/pit mix.

thanks for the links. she looked just like the dog in the first picture at the first site. she hasn't been swimming yet this year but we just had our first warm spell after being about 20 degrees below normal since early february so my daughter probably overworked her. My vet did mention that he used to have english setters so we really lucked out with him knowing what it is. All that and this years shots for $81. :biggrin2:

We call it swimmer's tail. It is basicly a sprain of the muscles in the tail from over use or trauma. Maybe flagging her tail while she 's been in heat. Who knows. Once the the inflammtion is gone the tail goes back to normal. We see tons of cases in Mn starting in the spring when the Labs hit the lakes.

thanks for explaining it. I was worried that it was broke and was so relieved that ti wasn't that I didn't ask questions this morning. He also told me to put a little vick's vapor rub on jakes nose so that he would leave luna alone. we try not to have both dogs out of their crates at the same time while she is in heat but it is hard to keep them from passing each other in the hall when it's potty time and they both want to go out. hopefully i can schedule their spay and neuter next month.
