Liver disease

That’s really interesting about the GLM. All of my adult dogs are on it, though luckily none have compromised livers.

Any idea if they hit the kidneys at all?

No idea Chris, and I'm not 100% sure of the GLM (there's very little research done that I could find online) except that in trying to rule out what might be causing Riley's liver enzymes to be elevated again (two repeat blood work his enzymes were dropping and were completely normal) I googled GLM and liver and came across this case study:

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/crihep/2012/135146/
It's enough of a confirmation for me to stop giving it to him but the bloodwork in 4 weeks will tell for sure. I'm still giving it to Piper and Finnie of course because they're healthy but for any dog that has liver issues I'd avoid GLM just to be on the safe side.

Oh dang it! Sorry to hear this. Hadn't heard that about GLM either - it has done Brooke (and myself!) such a world of good. My knee pain is completely gone with the GLM and it helped Brooke's limping a lot. Just had blood work myself and all normal, Brooke was all normal in Dec. It may be as you said, only affecting those with a history of liver disease to begin with. Poor Riley and poor you. Hope taking him off that is the simple fix.

I do hope it's the GLM too Sharon and not the Metacam as he needs that for the arthritis. Not many options for pain relief when they can't have an NSAID. He was actually having a bit more difficulty yesterday (a bit of a flare up it seems, could be the weather) so I upped his Gabapentin dose and it made a big difference. Glad I have such a good vet...I can just call her and she tells me what to give. He's still good on just the 8 kg dose of Metacam so I may try cutting it down to 6 but try 1 gabapentin 2/day as the gabapentin doesn't affect the liver. It all depends on him though, if he's good.

I'm sorry to hear about Riley's liver report! Hopefully it's a blip. I'm sure he could have been affected by the GLM. You never know; what doesn't affect one dog can easily react on another.

I'm sure we've had this conversation already, but do you give him a good quality milk thistle/curcumin supplement too? That can make a world of difference in liver readings.

I've had good luck using T Relief for pain both for post surgeries and arthritis, if you can't give the GLM. They make one for arthritis relief which is zeel for mobility and one made with arnica for pain. Both are natural and shouldn't affect his liver. I had to try both to see which one was more effective for my dogs and ended up with the arnica version, but for some the arthritis product works better. It's not expensive either, a bonus! Just a thought.

Thank you so much for that info Ann! Yes I do use a good milk thistle/curcumin , I fully believe that's why his numbers were going down.
I'll definitely look into the T Relief, I do see that Walmart carries it here. How much do you give your dogs, as I do see that it's a human medicine.
We'll see in 4 weeks if his numbers are better, besides the Metacam the only other thing it could be is the GLM so fingers crossed!

It is a human med but safe for pets. I give it once a day for maintenance but for treating pain I give one morning and evening. Hope it helps Riley!! :fl

I use this for my guys too. Bentley if he’s looking stiffer than usual, and the younger dogs if they took a spill during training.
