Living with small pets

My Shelties have all gotten along with our bunnies - the bunnies have had a separate pen in the backyard but they sniff noses thru the fence. Asta has tracked down escaped rabbits for me before. I just asked "Where's the bunny?" and she showed me where the escapee was hiding. Smart dog, eh?

:lol:thats my attention phrase for Tully - I say "where's the bunny" and she immediately gives me her full attention because she loves chasing those bunnies so much.

Sadie and Ginny's breeder has bunnies and whenever we're visiting, Sadie has her nose right up to the cage. She'll occasionally bark at them and get excited when they move, but I firmly believe that she'd never try to kill one if given the opportunity. She just wants to play. The same goes with Ginny.

I used to have a cockatiel that LOVED to tease Sadie when I had him out. A couple of times he'd fly and land on the ground, and Sadie tried to pick him up. Each time she was extremely gentle with him. We got to Sadie before she succeeded in carrying him, but we were never really worried. It was VERY funny, as Rocky was always highly insulted by the act, but never really stressed.

Sadie and Ginny both bark and carry on when they see squirrels and cats on walks, when in actuality both are great with cats. A friend of mine has a kitty that plays with Ginny. Ginny also has another unusual friend, a pot bellied pig named Lily that she loves to play chase with.

Lily and Ginny (I'm not sure if this link will work)

Toby I'm not 100% sure of yet. From what I've seen, he has a healthy respect for cats. I don't know if he ever had a bad experience, or if he'd just never seen one before, but he made sure to stay FAR away from them I imagine he'd be the same around other small animals.

Nike is the only dog I have that I would trust with my rabbit out. He just tries to herd Dublin in the living room, doesn't want her to leave. :smile2: I'm very lucky, we've never done any sort of training to encourage him to be nice, he always has considered her to be a friend of sorts.

The AKK and Sibe however...consider her the glorious dinner I have not had the decency to feed them yet. :rolleyes2: You would think the fascination would die down after so long, but not so much.

We continued to let Marlowe and Mochi sniff each other and we have graduated to doing it without a barrier. Now, I put Mochi on my lap and Marlowe comes to sniff her. He licked her once...you should have seen her face  He is very gentle and respectful with her. He is also very eager to see her and this is why...

Mochi poops wherever and whenever she feels like it (chinchilla poop is quite innocuous--dry, formed, no smell--so it's not as repulsive a habit as it sounds). The first time she pooped in front of Marlowe, he picked it up and ate it before I could get to it. He has developed a taste for it because he waits patiently at the barrier to the chinchilla room every night for me to bring her out. To him, she is the perpetual treat dispenser.
