Looking to Start!

I want to do agility with my new puppy (when I get him/her) and I'm wondering what I should start teaching it when it's a puppy. I know no jumps for a while because of their back plates (I believe...) but what could I do?

Thanks!

Agility is AWESOME!!!!!! You're going to have so much fun.

First of all, basic tricks are the most important thing. You are difinately going to need the puppy to know, come, sit, stay, etc.

After/ while learning basics, you can use a very small tippy board, ladder, and/ or plank to introduce your pup to agility. A tippy board (a board with something under it to make it rock) will get the puppy used to movement and gain confidence for when he needs to learn the teeter.

Walking your puppy carefully over a ladder (on the ground, flat) gets the dogs to realize 'oh, I have back feet!' It sounds silly, but it helps with their coordination.

The planks can just be short boards about a foot wide to walk the puppy back and forth, as preparation for the dogwalk.

Although jumping isn't recommended until later, I believe you can set up a jump (WITHOUT the bar in the middle) and get your puppy to walk though the sanctions.

As I said before, the basics are the most important thing in agility to learn as a puppy. You need to have a very strong foundation in order to build a strong agility career.

Good luck with your puppy(congrats!) and welcome to agility. :biggrin2:

if you do a search, there were some really good posts on the subject.
Also you can sign up for DVD rental Tawzerdogs or bowwowflix. Tawzerdogs is having black Friday 50% off sale if you want to buy books or DVD. I have found MaryEllen Barry fundamentals agility DVD terrific. Lots of skills you can do with wee puppy and will be very helpful for anyone who starts their training.
