Glad Barkley is feeling better. Shadow came up positive last year for Erlichia and was treated with Doxy for 2 months.I live in the town of Conn. where Lyme's disease gets it name.Lyme Conn.

I wonder if you got some Guinea Hens the Tick population would decrease. :yes: These little chickens love ticks and are used to reduce them. Or spray for Tick control. However the spray may not be good for your dogs and other animals. I thought I would pass this information along to you. Wild Turkeys love to eat Ticks too.:eek2:
Dasher and I wish Barkley a complete recovery. It's not fun to see our babies in misery like that.:(

I knew Guinea Hens ate ticks but have not heard that wild turkeys do as well. Thanks, Tracy! We have a wild turkey who feeds occasionally under our bird feeder...wish she'd feast on some ticks instead! :razz: Barkley continues to improve which is great...the antibiotics are clearly working although the downside is the puppy runs that come with Doxycyclene. Oh well, all those butt bathing posts will come in handy now! :lol:

Sharon, I live on the other side of Connecticut from you--in Southbury, on the western side. Don't we have great perks here in Connecticut??? Ticks, and the second highest gas prices in the nation.... :mad:

I was wondering what part of Conn. you lived in.I am on the shore 2 minutes from the beach.Southbury near Goshen?
 
We're about an hour from Goshen, Sharon...Southbury is on the 84 corridor between Danbury and Waterbury.

And to Chris...a friend of mine tried guinea hens to combat the infamous Connecticut ticks. They did not get along with her dogs, tended to wander to the neighbors' yards and were, shall we say, not friendly critters....you may want to turkey shop instead! :lol:
 
I was getting the Lyme vaccine for my Shelties, now I read that it's not a good idea. http://www.caberfeidh.com/Lyme.htm You might find some useful info there. I also heard about how Guinea Hens love to eat ticks, but I don't think I can have them on my lot. We mostly have trouble with dog ticks, I don't think I've seen a deer tick yet.
 
I had two of my previous Shelties vaccinated for Lyme, and they both got Lyme disease. My current vet, who practices both mainstream and holistic medicine, refuses to give the Lyme vaccine. My former vet said it's 85 percent effective; my current vet said it isn't even that and a disadvantage to using it is that it will mask the test results of a blood test for Lyme. :confused2:

I've heard the most effective thing is to treat your property for ticks. My son uses a spray treatment on his lawn. There are some products that are safe to use with dogs. We can't do that because of our horses. Anything we put on the grass can leach into the pasture. :dead:
