Making a jump

I was looking but with multiple sites decided to just make a jump. Of course I could not leave well enough alone :o

I started with the directions I found at this site: http://www.caninecrib.com/dog/training/standard-jump.asp

They are decent but you need to add screws to the parts list. Also remember that PVC comes in 10' lengths so you will have some waste. For a jump that follows those directions I would recommend 3 10' lengths.

But on with the mods. I figured to combine a multi-jump with that one. Sca should jump at 20" with the triple being 10"/15"/20". So for the first jump I plan on a 5" and 10". The second a 5", 10" and 15". The last jump has the low bar then I will add 20", 16", 12".

The reason I am going in jumps of 5" on the small but 4" on the final jump is the jump heights seem to increment in 4" for a single jump and I can reset it for guest dogs. The front two are 1/2 the height and distance of the jump though so that is not adjustable without parts changes.

It is not done and I will post more as I get further but so far I have $30 into it and that includes a $10 cutter (I highly recommend that vs a hacksaw) and a box of screws that should have a lot left over. For a base jump you should be able to get set for around $20 including the cutter.

So far :biggrin2:

Very cool.

The only problem I see is that dogs judge their jumps based on the base of the jump, not the cross pole. I don't know if having the extra PVC in front will throw off the stride or not when you aren't using all the bars.

When my dad built jumps, they had four different length legs so you could just rotate the jumps to change height. They involved entirely too much math, though. :dead:

I plan on making the front removable with standard legs able to be inserted in place of the multi-jumps. Using hitch pins to lock them will also make the front legs stay vertical when they are in use.

When I get a bit more done then I need to think on which joints to glue so that it is stiffer yet able to be broke down for travel.

Still have not put mounts on the front bar stands but...

The one picture with red circles shows the joints that are not glued

All told I have less than $30 into it and that includes a PVC cutter and colored tape that will be used on the next jump. I figure 10-15 or less for a regular jump.

The short legs pictured by themselves on brick are the alternate fronts if I want to remove the multi-bar. They need to be drilled like the multi-bar ones. I used stainless steel thumb screws and wing nuts so no tools needed if I carry it somewhere. I think I will cap the jump bar. That will keep water out and if I really got wild I would put silicone in the removable front stuff (though I doubt I will)
