I can raise my hand and state I had a setter that had such a stench. He lost his hair on his chest and underneath. At the base of the hair it looked like cotton candy where he had hair. Very flaky. Bald spots were wet/greasy.

Sure not a vet or close to it, but when I read a post like yours, I wonder if its the immune system.

Its such a heart wrenching situation for you and your sheltie, and when something goes wrong, we want answers. When answers can't be found its so frustrating.

Its been years ago, but the med they use to stop itching. Predisone or Cortisone? Nothing helped.

I sunk lots of money in him at the vets. Nothing was showing up, nothing helped. I will never forget that stench. I had to throw every thing away he laid on. The vet did want to do chemo and I refused to put him through that to give him 6 more months for the cancer that came fast and furious.

As I have stated in other posts on this. It started at 3 years of age, and I lost him at 7. He wore a T shirt where I put polyneosporum on him. We did battle together. For research purposes for other dogs, I donated his body to Purdue University. Great vet school. As I said his brother who I had too, lived until he was 15 1/2.

This could be something all together different for the sheltie, like I said its a process of elimination. I so agree on this with Justicemom too, the enviroment has so many allergies for some dogs. To find the answers for the vets it can be a tough one.

I do put faith in what she is saying. Its great to have two vets on board.

That seems like my Bacca exactly! He has no undercoat anymore from his shoulders to his legs. But his front and hind is still full coat. I always assumed this was because of his hypothyrodism.

I think if fur loss occurs elsewhere though, hypo would not be be the first cause based on my research for Bacca's condition
 
I would ask your vet for a referral to a Dermatologist. You are not insulting your vet just seeing a specialist just like we humans do. Wishing your pup more comfortable days ahead.
 
I'm wondering if this problem might be either fungal in nature, or a form of seborrhea. I read an article somewhere (confound my memory, I can't remember where!) that described a seborrhea-like condition that occurs in dogs and causes the usual inflammation, hair loss, oily skin discharge and a bad odor. If it's fungal it might respond to an over-the-counter fungicide such as the kind used for ringworm; if seborrhea perhaps a coal-tar-based shampoo.
 
I've read MANY comments about Shelties and skin problems,..... and it was mentioned also that Coconut Oil and Flax Seed oil helps their itching. I'm feeling really dumb right now -- but do you put the oil in his FOOD, or on his skin/bathe with it? :confused2:
 
I had the same problems with my border collie, red spots and licking constantly. Someone told us to try raw food and fish oil and probiotics, because it was probably a food allergy. After a few weeks of giving him this daily. He cleared up and now I give it to him a couple of times a week. Raw food he received occasional - I feed him beef liver. Good Luck
