Has anyone had any troubles with your dog marking?

This is a problem Sadie has every couple of months and its becoming quite frustrating.

Some times its retaliation, she doesn't like it when I take a shower and shut her out of the washroom. This seemed to be remedied 2-3 months ago by crating her when I go to shower.

I was furious with her yesterday! Now she's taken to pooping on our new carpeting!

I'm not sure what brought this on but I KNOW that its on purpose, she knows better. And after being scolded the first time for doing it she did it agian in the evening when my husband and I were near by! We could have killed her!

The first time she did it my husband had gotten up early to go work outside (garage renovations). He let her outside to relieve herself and then let her back in. I was in bed. At the time we were so shocked that she did it we wondered if she wasn't feeling well. It was a huge poo, much bigger than normal for her. I scolded her a little and crated her, despite feeling a bit bad. In the past if I don't do this every time she thinks its ok and does it agian.

Now I believe she did it on purpose, she didn't like that she was being ignored by me and that I hadn't gotten up to feed her.

In the evening we'd come in from sitting outside. Sadie and I went upstairs and I checked my email. My husband came upstairs to shower and at that moment she just walked out into the hallway and pooped in 3 different spots. Again, much bigger than usual and she never even asked to go out. She was fine all day and didn't appear to be feeling unwell. She didn't seem to need to go out urgently, she simly dropped her bum and went, I'm fairly certain there is nothing wrong with her.

She was scolded again and crated for the night. Usually she sleeps in our room with us.

I think its for attention but maybe she's thinking something else. Two other things happened that possibly could have coensided with the incidents?

Sadie's sister came over for a visit. Sadie is the dominant dog, maybe she's marking her territory because there was another dog in the house?

I caught Della, her sister, sniffing one of the areas where Sadie peed a couple of months ago. I was afraid that a visiting dog might pee over her pee spot so determined that it wouldn't happen, I went and bought a pet odour and stain remover for my compact deep cleaning carpet cleaner and thoroughly cleaned the two old spots. Perhaps she's marking because I've covered her scent?

Either way I'm getting VERY frustrated with her, our carpet is only about 3 months old and sadie has soiled it repeatedly. She is no longer going to be sleeping in our room with us and will not be allowed to go upstairs near the carpet at all.
 
How longs it been going on?

Is it possible she may have a urine infection like cystitis if its a recent development? My Mally bitch was having accidents left right and centre of both.

Might be worth speaking to the vet to rule out any medical reason for it. :o

ETA: just noticed every few months, is she spayed, and if not is it co-inciding with when she comes in season?

No expert just trying to think of things to help :)

doesn't really go on for any period of time, she'll have anywhere between 2-4 accidents and then not do it for 2-3 months so I doubt she has any problems. She has no trouble holding it when we're at work, and she's both in and out of her crate, she only has accidents when we're home and she's always been outside within an hour our two of the accident. Very frustrating since we keep thinking the phase is over.

I've previously been told that this is a behavioural issue, I'm just wondering if its the same one (demanding attention) or if its something a bit different and she's marking her territory.
 
After a visit to the vet to rule out cysts, UTI or any other problem I'd go to Petco or another type of pet supermarket and get her a pair of doggie pants. Leave them on her all of the time she is in the house and only take them off when you take her outside to potty. When she comes back in on go the pants! It will take some time for her to get the idea that you won't tolerate any "mistakes" in the house but she will get tired of having them on and straighten out.

I have had this issue with male foster dogs that are new to my home. They try to mark the furniture as soon as they walk in because I've also had unspayed females in the home earlier. These pants are kind of pricey but they are machine washable and the moisture barrier pads you insert can be the ones you buy for feminine hygine which are less expensive than the ones offered at the pet stores. I have used my pair of doggie pants on several dogs now and they do work!

Another thing to consider. If she does have a UTI after you finish your course of antibiotics you can prevent her from having another bout of UTI by adding cranberries once a week in her food. They are sweet and the dogs will eat them readilly.

I think this is a great idea. These pants are 25.00 so they are pricy I would crate her when you are busy doing something. My older dog Tasha was having urinary problems due to a tumor on her bladder so I purchased two pairs so I could have one being laundered and one to use.:o Good luck. I think it may just be her way of demanding some attention. The pants would halt that I think.:uhoh:
