Maybe Getting New Puppy Soon

View attachment 18167

Yeah. I was hoping we would be able to get into the vet sooner than October 19.

Someone mentioned structured play as walks and I don’t know how to manage to threads in one reply. :gaah since she only has her second set of shots out walks only consist of a couple strolls around the yard anyway to practice not being a jerk on the leash.

Exhausting her entirely is not my aim but getting her tired enough to settle down. She doesn’t have to sleep, but just- chill.

Pistol Piper is exactly what she is. A bit nicer than what I had been calling her. :ROFLMAO:

Ever since the Tipsy kong lunch she has been good. Lunch. Nap. Playtime (her favorite, she clearly runs it). More clicker charging and sits. Potties outside.

I wish I could upload a video… she’s figured out how to launch an attack from cover..
I’d say Piper is going to keep you VERY busy over the next 10 months!
Love that picture!

Food puzzle toys might work - Glenn just had a video of Willow working for her breakfast from one. They vary in difficulty. Nosework games of treasure hunting would work to engage her mind and tire her out. Works for ours. I also tend to think her playing with Roxy should be fine unless you feel she is really being bulldozed.

Puppies have a short attention span, like kids! So they can get bored. But I don't think you need to make sure she's busy every minute. As long as she's in a safe environment, she'll entertain herself.

Just one BIG word of caution - please be so careful of her weight. If you read Scout's mom's post, her 8 month old puppy was declared by the ortho vet to be 5 lb overweight - that is a big percentage of his total body weight. Shelties always act like they are starving. Someone mentioned a study on littermates that showed the pups kept lean lived longer and healthier lives. The stress on their joints, especially as they are growing can be immense with extra weight. It's OK to be able to feel their ribs and backbone, that does not mean they are too skinny!
Your absolutely right Sharon...I’d taken my Piper to the vet when he was a puppy because I could feel his rids and thought he was too skinny (my first pup in 15 years) and vet felt his ribs and said he’s perfect. So when I thought Blueberry was putting on weight I quickly cut back on her food. It’s so much harder to get it off than it is to put it on.
The other day my mom commented (with dismay) that Finnie looked like he’d lost weight...I quickly changed the subject but thought good lol...he’s been on a bit of a weight loss. Nice to see it’s working.

you can upload a video to youtube and paste the link here in your thread....
the way that I understand the minutes/month is that is you and the puppy working together for that amount of time- probably repetitions of doing something. playing with your other dogs doesn't really count against that as that is something the puppy is choosing to do.
when Cranberry was a puppy, I would give him naptimes by putting him in his crate- he was like a little kid and needed the downtime but didn't want to miss out on anything either.....

She does get super annoying when she’s overtired. She does often put herself down for a nap.

I feel better thinking about the exercise the way you guys have explained it. I don’t want to run her entirely ragged but that little exercise a day isn’t going to do anything to decrease the energy in this little monster!

The contrast between them makes it so obvious just how grown up Roxy has gotten. I never thought calm and dignified would be applicable to her. But she really is.

Ahahahah. Yeah. It just gets more incessant. And as I turn my back, she turns with me.

Piper here- “I will not be ignored!”

:gaah
That means it is working. Don't turn around either just go in you are not there mode for a bit. At any time if she pauses in barking 'oh there you are puppy!'

As to putting them down Spitfire would go and go until he almost fell over then he would lay down and you could see his head nod then jerk up until pass out. Of course once asleep I have never seen a dog sleep as hard as him. And should you disturb him you WILL get a stinkeye.

I put her in her play pen with a small smear of peanut butter in a Kong. She had a minor fit and just kept my back to her. Man oh man it’s hard when that puppy bark is so loud and sharp.

I found some other posts from other people forging the path before me and saw maybe Sharon, Ann, or Trini with the one “No” or “Quiet,” that seemed to grab her attention enough to get a pause and a dirty look. Good girl Piper. She hit the kong again fell asleep.

They really do get annoying when they are tired! I had forgotten about that.

I don’t care overmuch about the barking, I’ve gotten into the wrong breed if I did, but I just hope to get her to learn to settle down quickly. We travel quite a bit during normal times, and almost only ever go where the dogs are allowed as well but, motels and campgrounds are going to be even less impressed by her fits than we are:wideyed::grumpy::arghh:

I try to catch her in the breaks between attention seeking barks. Sometimes they’re too short for me to catch it quick enough. Maybe, hopefully, the pauses will get longer to the point of extinction of that particular trick.

Don’t get me wrong- she is an AWESOME little puppy and I adore her feistiness. Just, this one is something I want to nip in the bud sooner rather than later. They can both make all the racket and carry on as much as they like…. Outside. Truth be told I don’t really care if they carry on inside, at home. While they’re are playing.

I found that as much as Blueberry barks at home she’s really one of my quietest away from home! At the show 3 weeks ago she didn’t even bark even amongst the other Shelties! At home she barks when she wants something or when I come home. When I first got her it was January and bitter cold so we didn’t start the house breaking for a good couple weeks. She was litter box trained so peed on pee pads so I gave her way way too much freedom. After 1 week she would bark at me if I said no to her and she was way too much for my other 2! Then I re read The Art of Raising a Puppy and I started keeping her in her puppy pen for play with short time out of it for play with the other two (she’s such a confident girl and was running me ragged lol)...she was house broken by 3 1/2 months and has turned into a very good girl. I recommend that book to anyone who has a new pup!
She’s now 10 1/2 months and still uses the puppy pen (it’s an Iris pen...absolutely love it) when I work ...she’s in it for 4 hours (my 93 year old mom lives with me and gets Homecare) and then I come home for a break and she has freedom on the main floor with the other 2 for 3 hours. I have lots of baby gates! She’s finally getting out of her chewing phase but loves cardboard lol!
