Maybe no. 3 dog in my house?????

17 yrs

I knew that Kaleigh & Savannah would most probably be my last dogs...if they follow true to the lifespan of my others...I should survive them, but I knew this was my last time to have puppies. They are NOT something I would do again...if for any reason I lose them early, then I will have to get another adult dog...puppyhood is too taxing for me at this stage of life. I can't imagine life w/o a fur kid, but I don't wanna ever do anymore in the middle of the night when it is cold potty patrol. Standing around in (-) temps this winter cured me for good. She didn't like it, and I hated it!!!!

Well, Callan's breeder and I are being cautious.

Her new litter has a tri, a sable and a blue available. The lone female is already spoken for. So the remaining are all males.

Personality will determine I think. Or my breeder may decide it's too early for me to take on another b b I respect her for being able to say if she thinks I or my dogs are unready for a 3rd. That's a responsible breeder, and I know she is asking me all the right questions. And causing me to ask myself too. But I'm stil,70% or more to yes.

What say you all to 3 Males? Both indy and Callan are neutered.

As I type this, Callan is sitting next to me on bed in Bacca's spot. :o Indy is in his usual spot at my feet. I can't imagine where the 3 pup will lie!

So torn.....

Sounds like you are pretty much decided. Make a list of pros & cons and then if you're still sure - go for it.

I may look at getting a second when Hanna is 3 or 4, and at that point it would likely be a pom ( something small and sturdy that can be easily exercised indoors and also can fly in the cabin with me when I visit the kids out west, so doesn't need boarding). I already feel pretty guilty about how little we get Hanna out when it's really cold out. Hubby does take her cross country skiing (13 km loop) but that only happens when the snow is really good, so this winter about 3 times. Otherwise we play a lot of fetch & tug indoors and go out for really short little walks - ditto for the rain. We make it up to her the rest of year, with a minimum 3 km walk usually twice a day and a much longer go a couple of times a week.

My hubby also wasn't all that keen on getting another dog and I been really lucky that they are smitten with each other. He keeps saying how's she the best little dog ever, and she adores him  So I hate to mess with that.

I have three males now and three males before, all unneutered until Yogi had to be done for medical reasons. My neighbour and friend has four full males, two of whom are occasionally used at stud. There are odd minor 'squabbles' as you would expect in any household but I think on the whole sheltie males are generally easy going as housemates and more likely to get on than three entire bitches. Of all our current and past shelties, Epic is the most belligerent and yet even he has accepted another male into the house, although the first few days were difficult. I would add that I was extremely careful with the temperament of the new dog (Angus) as one that was too cocky and full of himself would have clashed with Epic, and one too submissive would have been bullied. Getting dogs of the same breeding does seem to be a good plan as they tend to recognise and accept family members somehow, especially if introduced from an early age.

As a caveat however I do know people who have not been as successful and have males that they have to separate because they fight. in some instances this is because there are bitches in season around too, which is understandably a trigger but in at least one situation it was just two males that didn't get on in a houseful of male shelties. Not knowing the dynamics of the situation or any details there may well have been other issues going on though and certainly I know more happy houses of bachelors than problems so there is every likelihood three males will co-exist as chums.

Well, I made the call....no Sheltie 3 for me this year. It was close call. But sanity prevailed....so I think I will wait another year when Callan is 2 and Indy is 8. Sigh! It would have been nice (though insane)

I decided that Callan still needs more work....and I've got too much other change going on that this decision to bring in another pup would be knee jerk. So maybe next year.....

This was a hard one to call. But I think the right choice. But I want a puppy! Waah!

Given all that - it does seem like the right choice. I do get the new puppy fever however, there was a rescue posted yesterday that would have had me seriously negotiating with hubby had it been closer to here. The time isn't right for us either, so I am going to be strong in the face of all the cute thta's out there.

Oh, yeah....I know about rescues.

I had an adoption rescue event at my store this weekend.....I was seriously looking at two of them....A Sheltie/Pom/something and a spaniel e something......

At the same time, this weekend that I decided not to bring home a new puppy, I also decided not to bring home a rescue.....yet.......

Two is a pair, Three is a pack. :)

That said, the most beautiful boy blue puppy was recently being offered. The most beautiful blue boy! I still get chills looking at his handsome little In-Size self. :)

However, Flyer is not even a year old. Uncle Justus has been so gracious to share me, and now that he is in the prime of his obedience career, with agility plans coming on strong...

Well, the good news is - there's always puppies. Someone will really luck out with that cute blue boy ... I know, because I've lucked out with my two boys, and when the time is right sheltie # 3 will come to be!

Good luck Barb, if I had more money and time - I know I'd be the crazy sheltie lady with a dozen. :)
