MDR1 Mutant and Surgery

It is coming time for Casey to be neutered. Being he is MDR1 Mutant-Normal, I am dreading the day. From what I've read I think the biggest problem with MDR1 Mutants is not the heartworm meds but the other meds, like Ace. Our vet said she could use other meds than Ace. Still, I am terrified to do this. Not doing it for probably another month, but I would really prefer the IM specialist do it, but know they probably wouldn't do a simple neuter that really isn't that simple thanks to the mutant gene.

Would appreciate any shared experiences of surgery and a MDR1 mutant pet.

My mutant/mutant Collie just had a lumpectomy and dental, she did fine. I also had a normal/normal dog neutered with a lumpectomy on the same day, and he was a drooley mess when I picked him up. She walked out like she never had surgery.

I made sure my vet knew she was a "mutant" dog, and that the tech noted it in big letters, and it was all good.

The same day, my mother had her mutant/normal dogs teeth cleaned, and he did fine.

I think what I worry about most is the vet techs. I know the vet is aware, but I want it in neon letteres for the vet techs that he can take this med..... but he can't take this med........

Your post makes me feel a little better.

yup I always let the vet know. And also who ever at that time has my dogs paperwork in their hand. I make sure they write it down and highlight it. I had my normal/mutant dog in for surgery and he did just fine...took him a little longer than the others it seems to come around..but the other dogs are also crazy normally, lol so its hard to say..he may just be normal compared to my others :)

Don't worry, if the vet is aware they can easily adapt their protocols. Deska is mutant-normal. When he was desexed he did not react well to the surgery. At the time I didn't know his MDR1 status, but it made me decide to get him tested. Since then he has had many x-rays and major surgery on his elbows and didn't have any problems because the vets changed the protocol to compensate for that. The vet techs cannot give any medication without approval from the vet first. It's always going to be a stress when our pups go into surgery though.

Riley is mutant/mutant and I plan on getting neutered around a year. Being MDR1 positive really scares me about getting him neutered especially since he is also cryptorchid requiring a more invasive surgery. Last time I went in for heartworm I gave the technician a copy of Riley's test plus a printout from WSU about MDR1. They put a medical alert flag on his file. I will give them another copy of the WSU info when I get him neutered.

I also have his name tags say MDR1 med alert in case he ever got lost and was taken to a vet.
