Meet our new pup, Charlie! (Ontario)

Hello everyone,

We have just gotten our new Sheltie Pup and named him Charlie. He will be turning 12 weeks tomorrow. :smile2:

He has been with us for 1 week and is settling in nicely. We are about 70% potty trained now. We had 5-6 in the house accidents per day at first and now we are down to 1-2 and are proud of him.

We are working on leash training with him, but boy is he stubborn! If he doesn't want to go for a walk, he puts on his brakes and won't budge. Other times, he can't walk fast enough! He will be enrolled in obedience classes at 16 weeks after he's had his rabies shot.

Charlie is having some extreme dandruff problems right now. He is going to the vet tomorrow for his 12 weeks shots and we will discuss this problem with the vet. Our first course of action is switching him to a new food. He was on Purina Focus Puppy food when we got him and we are now looking at switching him over to Organix Dry Puppy Mix to see how that goes. If anyone else has any experience with this food I would love to hear from you! :smile2:
 
A big welcome to you and Charlie. He sounds like a little lad who has a mind of his own and will spice up your life with both love and laughter.

And, of course, everyone is going to ask to see pics...we do love pictures!! :smile2:

Re: walking on the leash - take a wooden spoon, put on some peanut butter, and then walk him. Every now and then, lower the spoon, let him have a lick, and then raise it.

About the dandruff, I haven't tried that food, but ask the vet if it is okay at his age to add in a bit of coconut oil. It does help. You may have to wait though until he is older.

We all look forward to getting to meet and know your little Charlie and as everyone else will tell you, we can't wait to see pictures of your little man. He is already displaying his own personality and showing that he is going to be very stubborn and headstrong, and I'm guessing lots of fun and love to your house. :smile2:
 
Welcome! It sounds like you've got a sweet boy who already has a mind of his own. He's doing great on potty training if he's already 70% trained, he's a smart one.

Where from Ontario are you from?

One question? Are you crate training Charlie? At 12 weeks you should not be getting this many accidents per day.

First thing in the morning, 5-10 minutes after eating and playtime, after naps, you must take the dog outside and stick there until they do business. Then great praise and treats. When you can't watch the pup, in the crate he goes. Make sure that crate is not over large. Because he can pee in one corner and sleep in another

Puppies will poo maybe 3-4 times per day. As they older it goes down to 1-3 times

Crates are NOT prisons. They are safe places for your dog and really do help in housetraining and later destructive chewing.

I've had great success with this with my last three pups. By 10-12 weeks no longer peeing inside. After that any poop accidents were my fault for not paying attention.....and the super cold winter we had!

After housetraining, you have chewing.... I've been crating my dogs up to 18 months. But once housetrained I put the crate inside an xpen so he has more room to play when I can't watch him.
