Megan is a brat!

, I have SOOO been there and done that with Meg and the treat thing. I don't think she can get out, I mean she would have to be VERY eager as we have small gaps from the ground to the fence. Therefore I don't know how comfortable I would feel leaving her outside without me home .

Well I hear ya on leaving her while your gone.as we do not leave Trapp at this point either.

Even if he is always out with Earnhardt.As Mr.Trapp is a digger.He has holes dug near fence lines,he has a hole dug so deep at the other end of the acre,at the base of a big old tree.
Darn he has roots exposed in one place.So we're resorting to putting poop in the holes.So far it's working.(fingers crossed) It's a good way to dispose of poop!

Now he has been left out with Earnhardt while I'm home,he's quite content.And more so now since Jasper has joined the pack.
It will be a good while before I trust him to be left alone while I'm gone.

Wow, haha, using poop to fill in the holes, LOL! Megan has dug little holes throughout the backyard but I am pretty confident our back yard is MUCH smaller than yours so we couldnt recycle her waste . What a hoot

I read it online a long time ago,as Earnie was the worlds worst digger.And it really works! But they sometimes will go for another place to start..so you just keep filling holes.It worked with him,and so far with Trapp it has to.

Yes we do have a fair amount of acreage,almost two acres fenced,it can be interesting walking fence lines checking.But it's only fence close to the front. We have I'm guessing 8 gates,3 of which are double swinging gates.And the others are single gate openings.

Wish I could help. I have the exact opposite problem. Kai’a is wonderful when it's time to come in (might be because she sometimes gets to herd in our cat ). But in all honesty she comes in perfectly ... it's just the going outside that we have issue with.

We taught her to ring a bell to indicate when she needs to go out to do business. And she does this every time. Can't think of the last time we had an accident in the house ...maybe her 2nd week home? But with this bell comes a great responsibility. If she rings it, we need to let her out. Period. However, after she has gone, she will sometimes keep ringing it for 30 - 45 minutes afterwards. We let her out, she runs around, we call her back, in she comes, then 2 mintues later, she rings the bell .... thus the cycle. And it's not like she hasn't gotten outside play time ... this usually occurs after her morning or evening walk strangely enough.

And we have to take her out. We do not want her to learn that it will only work some times. What we started doing is if she keeps ringing the bell for some extra outside play, then well will give her a time out in her den. We don't shut the door, but just put her or ask her to go into it; sometimes with a toy she enjoys. Once, we did have to give her an "official" time out, which did require us to shut the door to her crate (her Den as we call it).

Lately she might test us a little, but once she has gone out and done her business, she knows that a time out will follow if she abuses her bell.

But Megan is being a little bratty with Mom. Testing you, which I am sure is frustrating especially when you need her to come in and can't chase her to get her in. I would find a way to make her, on her own, want to be inside more that out. Best of Luck!!!

Hi Megansmom,

I have a few ideas for you:

- Tether her. My friend uses a really long clothesline for this purpose. One end is inside the house and the other end is on the dog. Nice for the last-thing-at-night or first-thing-in-the-morning pee.

- Go out with her and take her on a leash to do her business. Let her loose only if you have time for her to party.

- Practice picking her up and taking her in, then letting her back out to play. This way she doesn't associate "come" with something negative (e.g. play session ending). During Buffy's play sessions at the dog park or elsewhere we often pick her up and put her back for mini play sessions.

I also agree with this. When Kai'a was ringing her bell every 10 seconds someone here suggested that we take her out on a leash for her business. That way she would be able to tell the difference between play and potty. It really worked for us. When she rang the bell, out came the leash, and she soon learned that ringing the bell (aka going potty) did not mean fun times, so she stopped ringing it nonstop. We were able to stop using the leash after about a week as she got the idea really quickly.

no words of advice except how we taught pup to leave the pooch park... you turn and start happily run toward the gate making it a game... pup will follow... but we have totally different situation...
we have extensive gardens with many rare plants therefore no fence as I can not trust pup not to dig the road to China...
therefore every in and out on the leash, rain or shine, thankfully there is pooch park nearby so pup goes twice a day and so are local walks on the leash too...
pup has learned in one week to indicate when he is done with pooch park and ready to go... pretty obvious if one wants to see...
he is also pretty good with doing his biz on the cue word so no problem there as well...
