Backstory: Had her 1-1/2 years now, age anywhere between 6- ?, former breeder, dumped on the streets, spoke only Spanish (yea, kinda irrelevant but kinda cool as she is now a bilingual dog), she is a big 16-1/2" girl and wide though she's down to not a heck of a lot of fat on her at 32 pounds coming down from 39 pounds. Oh, and she only pees about 4 times a day. I mean no matter how much coaxing, treating, nagging, watching others, trooping out with the boys, she pees at 5, 2, 5, 9 with HUGE full-bladder pees.
Last night she had an accident on the carpet. She has NEVER had an accident. There were drops of blood in it. I think she was doing her best to tell me something is amiss. Took her out, peed a bit more, 2 dry pees. Got her on amoxi immediately. I have some on hand. I also have Cipro if you all think it is a better option -- but everything online suggests amoxi is a good start and I know she tolerates it fine. In the course of the evening she peed 3 more times small amounts, normal, like a dog who pees often. No pain, no strain, no apparent overall distress, no lethargy. In addition, she is really dicey about having the feminine area trimmed. It's been awhile and it definitely needed a clean up. Husband helped and I got the clump of somewhat sticky hair removed and she was not especially red or irritated looking, healthy pink tissue at the opening.
Just hoping this is a UTI or maybe a bit of bladder sludge/sand/stones -- I had a Himi with the bladder sand thing. He was on special food his whole life and I managed. Praying real hard this is not the tip of the big C. Most likely is a bit of an infection from lack of a sanitary feminine trim for some time now. If we don't improve or appear worse, I will get a vet appt. for Thurs/Fri/Sat. Otherwise, if she improves we will wait it out and see if this is a one-time thing before going in and going for the full diagnostics.
My questions: 1) Amoxi or Cipro? 2) We are on Acana 2/3 and TOTW 1/3. Are there any red flags with Acana or TOTW lending to stones/sand/sludge/UTI? 3) She is prone to yeast infections of ears (twice in 1-1/2 years and likely related to water getting in there) but should I proactively treat the ear with vinegar/water or ear cleaner or such?
Thanks for answers . . . This is why I am quitting my job Friday, to not let things (like sanitary trims) fall through the cracks.
