I'm in the process of switching Lacey from puppy food that has brown rice (Merrick puppy) to a grain free lamb. She has had soft stools and cling-ons. I'm hoping that switching will stop this. she seems to like the new food too!!

success!! no tummy upset from starting the switch and....solid poop!!! Hurray!!

Honestly, to anyone reading this post.....if your pups are have issues with their poops, then its time to look at other diet choices.

Add carrots, green beans, pumpkin, sweet pototoe vegetable fibers to their diet and you will see runny poops go away!

I used to feed my forever dog #1, Timber, Eukanaba. I thought it was good food. I didn't know any better. He had so many issues with runny poops I used to have the wipe his bum every day. I thought I was feeding him good food and I thought it was just because he was getting older.

Since them I've had Bacca, Indy and Callan....I've never had to wipe any of their bums. Grain free diet......from the start!

I started Declin off on Blue Buffalo puppy… He had "soft-serve" poops constantly! I was tearing chunks of grass out of the lawn just to make sure I got everything. I'm lucky that he didn't have that much fur six months ago… Or I would have really been in trouble!

He really didn't care for that food, and between that and the poops I started looking around for alternatives. I literally tried about seven different foods before I found Orijen. He tried it, loved it, and hooray, solid poops!!

I went grain free (wellness core) years ago, and it has really helped with the messy poops. Now when he has an issue, I know it is from too many treats or something similar. I know the food costs more and can be harder to find, but it makes my life so much easier. best decision I made.

Addie is on Merrick puppy and has nice stool (man, never thought I would say that!!). But, when she potties she scoots when she's done and wipes her own bum lol. (nope, no worms).

I never have to worry about this - but will get a poop chute done when her hair gets longer

We spent a lot of time on the Sheltie Forum discussing the bum trim. I still recommend it. But dogs, any breed, should not habitually have messy poops unless something is wrong.

But whenever someone comes into my store asking about messy poops I just have to drill down on what the dog is eating....And is there evidence of worms?

For all dietary immediate concerns, I do recommend pumpkin or sweet potato - either canned (not human grade, btw) or in treat form

It could be a food allergy - chicken and beef are the main culprits.

Yes, you can certainly groom it away, but I would look for root causes.

Funny thing is that if you have "multi sheltie syndrome" like I do, you will notice that one dog has a problem with dirty bums and others never do regardless of diet.
My female has a chronic problem with this unless the groomer shaves her "panties" on a regular basis. She is a blue merle and her entire coat is noticeably coarser than my Shelties with a tri color coat and I suspect the hairs catch the poop more easily.
She also needs her anal glands cleared out on a regular basis (thankfully my groomer does that too!) and when she starts "scooting" across the floor, it's a sign that it's time!
