Metacam/Simplicef

I posted in another thread about Lexi going to the bathroom in the house a lot. Sure enough, the vet says she has more issues.

For her first UTI we were giving her amoxicillin, but it didn't completely clear it up.

We now are giving her Metacam (just a little for 3 days), and then 20 days worth of Simplicef.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I'm just curious what the difference is.

Also, just to note, the vet recommended NOT to use cranberry tablets or anything because they are acidic, and actually increase pain because of acid.

Bailey was on simplecef to treat her UTI. That was the last antibiotic she was on. It did cut her down peeing every 20 minutes to every 2-3 hours.

Metacam is a strange one, its an anti-inflammatory. Deska has been on metacam a few times. The first time was after his desexing, he was cryptoid and the surgery quite invasive, he had a lot of pain afterwards so was on the metacam until things settled down. He has also been on it when he has injured himself during thunderstorms. He used to throw himself at the fence if he was outside and the doors if inside to try to attack the storm and has injured himself quite badly. The vet gave him a short course of metacam for the injury.

My vet doesnt like giving the metacam for any period of time, not sure why. But on each occassion it did give Deska a bit of an upset stomach initially, but it worked wonders. There was a noticeable change in his injuries within a couple of days.

The other drug, simplecef is the same as the human drugs keflex and ceclor. In humans it is commonly used as as a second line antibiotic. There is a higher risk of allergic reaction in cephalosporins in humans (not sure if its the same for dogs) but keep an eye on her anyway. Itching and redness and puffy eyes are common allergic responses. As with penicillans it can upset the internal flora (good bacteria) - daily yoghurt or a good supplement will help with that.

A vet will be able to give you a better idea about the combination of the two in dogs - my speciality is human health.

My Cedar was on Metacam when he had Lyme's Disease and needed pain relief/anti-inflammatory. I believe it can be tough on the Kidneys...so I would be careful on long time use.

She's just taking 1/4 pill once a day for 3 days. The vet said it would be good for the inflammation if it's causing her any pain.

Metacam is used to help inflammation and decrease the urge to go. Simplicef are a different class of antibiotic then Amoxicillin. It is better at controlling a wider type of UTI in dogs than amoxicillin. We see alot of bacterial resistance with amoxicillin. 2nd UTI I usually consider a urine culture to find out exactly what antibiotic will get rid of it.

My beloved Golden boy Tyler had chronic UTI's and the only antibiotic that helped him was Baytril. It's hard hitting but it's specific for UTI's, kidneys, liver, etc.

You can't give Baytril to puppies. It affects the cartilage developement.
