Miss Sadie and Baby

How do I introduce Miss Sadie to our new granddaughter? I don't want the baby hurt and I don't know if I trust Miss Sadie. I have been keeping her gated in the kitchen when baby is here. Any help appreciated.

Can you pick her up and bring her to the baby and carefully let her sniff the little one? Mine have all been good with little ones. The girls bring the babies inside in their carriers and set them on the floor. The dogs go up under our supervision and give a sniff and check out the new little critter and then go on their way. Or else put Sadie on her lead and bring her to the baby.

I don't know what Miss Sadie's personality is, but my sheltie Buffy is great with babies. Sounds like most shelties are. However, if you are in doubt maybe you could keep her on a leash around the baby and give her a treat if she acts appropriately. Also, it might be a good idea to only have them together for short times. Even though Buffy is good with babies we always supervise her with my niece or my friend's baby.

There are classes about preparing a dog for a baby around my area. You may want to look into this or consult with a trainer if you run into issues.

Thank you. I might try the leash idea. I think she will be ok because she is gental with other things. She's not aggresive at all.

I did the same thing as Emmasmom. Baby came inside in her carrier and we put it on the floor. All four dogs gathered around and sniffed gently. Barkley insisted on giving kisses, which is his thing. They were all very good from day one, and still are six months later. Checkers is especially baby-oriented and loves being around her, and Barkley still gives kisses. Now we can put my granddaughter on the floor or sit with her on the couch and she will reach out for the dogs. We always supervise of course.

I would put Sadie on a leash while the baby is in a carrier and introduce them that way as everyone suggested. I think Sadie will surprise you.
