I think it just may be the addition of a LOT of new things in the house. The house is in utter chaos while we are getting things settled. Plus, we have one room full of boxes that she won't enter. I'm pretty much a neat freak and me being upset about all the chaos isn't helping her much.
She's great around other dogs, even allowing Gracie the Terror to sleep draped over her (Gracie has been in residence only two weeks). But out in the yard, a barking dog in the distance makes her uneasy. Any dog up close is fine, be they strange or familiar.
A lot of the things that were moved may still smell like Neechee (i.e. bedding, blankets, etc.) who was very frail his last couple of weeks. Could this make a difference?
Come to think of it, Bela is VERY uneasy around the glass fireplace doors. It could be her reflection she's reacting to. Remember that she's a puppy mill rescue, and everything about living in a household is new to her. We normally live such a quiet life - little traffic, no visitors, mostly indoors, and I spend a lot of time sitting or lying down due to my spinal problems - that I think she's not getting used to things that are "different" very quickly. After all, she's only been with us since the beginning of June.
Gracie has been very good for her in a lot of ways. She's having to assert herself (which she has NO problem doing), and is learning to ask for attention. Plus, her house manners make Gracie (who was obviously raised indoors and ended up with rescue by going walkabout) look like a heathen.
So I really don't have much to complain about, except that Bela's distress causes me distress. I try not to coddle her (it's hard), especially on her various fears. I have found that gentle encouragement and (in the case of her kitchen fears) very gentle force is required.
