Motion sickness

My pleasure!!!!!!!! Good luck and hope she gets better. :biggrin2:

I went this route also, and I will tell you for Jasper it did not work.He only puked up nasty mush ginger cookies. We tried Bonine, anti stress meds (OTC) I tried Bach's remedy..none of it worked.I have a cabinet full of stuff, and I might as well say I wasted money.

What I feel is important,is that starting out all over again, step by step, baby steps.Desensitizing him to the vehicle, the whole experiance.so lots of high value treats, taking each increment of the experiance one thing at a time.

It many take you awhile, but eventually he will grow to be accustomed to it.Even if he does puke, take towels or whatever to continue. He will learn to swallow the overflow of drool, and get used to the ride.

I do also think that asking for a few Cerenia pills, will get him over the hump that first time after you give it to him,and him going in the vehicle.Once he does it the first few times, with your support & encouragement, the sickness will get less & less.Besides, even if they are not used for that purpose,it is one of those little magic pills that is good to have on hand.

Don't let car sickness come between him getting used to the outside world, and not getting socialized. It was a major drawback for Jasper, cause as soon as he puked, even if I did not get out of the driveway, his socialization was severely hampered. And that was my fault.
So we had to play catch up,and we still continue to play catch up with him.But he is 95% better now in public than what he was say 7 months ago.

Hahaha nono we never get angry. My friends sometimes point at my jacket because it looked like a waterfall hit me by hahaha but I don't mind and I have a separate jacket for dog wear so its all good :) But yes wanted to ask the question because surely she doesn't feel well when she's on these car rides and I feel bad because we're in the car or transit quite often : P Hmmm I Didn't know you could use human medications on dogs o-o.. Would you have any more information on how you give gravel to your pet??? I've never heard of this before haha

I would reccomend trying gravol or one of the other medecines mentioned. We use both Gravol and a vet prescribed drug (cant remember what it's called) depending on the length of the trip and both work. Domino is 3 and he hasn't grown out of the car sickness but you just learn to deal with it. As Toffee's Mom said - keep a stash of paper towels and blankets in the car just in case and never ever get frustrated at them for the mess.

Give her Cerennia (from the Vet) it's quite cheap and have it on hand for long car rides to let her have good experiences for longer car rides.

Hmmm I guess a little too late... Was heading out to obedience class today and she threw up twice in a row... What a mess it was, made us late to class... I`ll definitely try to work on her with that as soon as I can :(

Deska gets motion sickness a lot and quite badly and as we travel a lot it can be very difficult - I always had to carry spare blankets for the seats. I now use phenergan (promethazine) all the time when we travel and he has never been sick when using it.

I have got motion sickness pills from the vet but the phenergan works much better and it doesnt make him all wobbly like the vet stuff (plus its heap cheaper). I did ask the vet about using it and amounts and it is perfectly safe for dogs. The vet said to give him 10mg but I find half of that works fine and doesnt make him so drowsy (Deska is 11kg). I also use this drug for Tully's hay fever - I give her 2.5mg although she can have 5mg (she is 6kg) and she has it every day during hay fever times.

Phenergan is a human drug used mostly for allergies and motion sickness but also as a light sleeping tonic as it makes people drowsy although not so much dogs. (I use it myself when I need to sleep). But you can check with your vet how much you can give. You just need a pill cutter to cut to the smaller doses.

Poor Precious, so sorry to hear she has such a hard time :(

Caro, glad u found something that works, but Cerennia doesn't make the dog drowsy, that's why I love it so much...

A long time ago when my Boxer had anxiety issues in the car since she was with me when I had that car accident, (both of us were never the same after, emotionally) all medication made her drowsy.
This is why I was so happy now when my vet recommended Cerennia. It worked for Toffee and we can can still go for hikes hikes and agility trials while on the medication!

Of course I am glad he doesn't need it anymore (knock on wood) but just to give a dog a great experience in the car without it being sick makes such a difference in training them to be comfortable in it :)

Fingers and toes crossed Cerenia or something else works for Precious!!! I'm headed to the vet on Monday and will let you know how Brandy makes out, as I'm going to take her for a long ride to test the meds.

I`m so sorry to hear and so glad that you both are hopefully doing better, I`ll definitely ask about Cerenia :)

Please let me know how it goes! Today is a Sunday so my vet isn't open) but I'll inquire about it as soon as I can! Thank you for all the information on Cerennia!
