Mute Sheltie?

Has anyone else ever heard of another mute Sheltie?

My Snowy (a double merle) is completely mute. From what the vet has been able to tell, she was born with abnormal cartilage surrounding her voice box, which does not allow it to function.

While she has many deformities common to double merles (limited vision, deafness, deformed teeth, scoliosis), she has a few others (two club paws and the muteness) that are not normally associated with the double merle genes.

We rescued her as an adult, so we don't know her full medical history, other than she was used as a breeder at a pretty shady place.

I have yet to find anyone with a dog with similar issues that I could 'compare notes with' so to speak, and was hoping someone here might have known/read/heard about another similar situation.

For anyone interested in seeing how Snowy manages in our crazy household, here is a page of her pics/videos.

Sicne my first language is not english, could you enlighten me as to what are «club paws»?

You could never tell your first language is not English! Your english is very good.

"Club paws" are simply misshapen, like a club foot in a human.
Here is a pic of one of them

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm ok in english, that's where my countless hours of wasted time on internet forums really show. :wink2:

Your dog really has a crapload of issues, although watching that youtube vid that you linked, he's obviously a fighter who seems perfectly happy.

The fact that a disabled dog (no disrespect here) was used to breed shows how little moral values puppy mill owners and shady breeders have.

Thanks, Hugo.
When I first saw her on petfinder, and read her listing, I was worried about her quality of life. But she doens't know that anything is 'wrong' with her, and is a very active, spunky, crazy, little Sheltie.

And yes, she is proof that there are some very, very bad 'backyard breeders' out there.

we're very glad that you gave her a good home. My sheltie was debarked by the original owner- I got her from breed rescue and her bark is actually very cute but we are pretty sure it was surgically altered and not that she was born that way.

Unfortunatly, some breeders will us Double Merles, because they produce all Merle pups.
But her breeder days are long behind her. She is well into her happy, playful, and somewhat lazy retirement days!
